The writers on Smallville liked doing the whole dark, semi-realistic thing. notice that the Justice League members all look like they're wearing athletic gear instead of costumes.

Not knocking it at all, since it worked for the context, but I think that's probably why they were more likely to have her be Nightwing than Robin.

I meant to post this in this thread, but accidentally posted in the announcement thread instead.

While it would be better to see Steph reintroduced to the DCnU in a permanent manner, I think having her appear in Smallville along with the first appearance of that universe's Batman (which fans have been asking for for a while) is a good first step. It's by no means an adequate substitute, given that we likely won't see much of her, but at least its something. And it's BQM, so you know she's going to be handled well.

I'm totally excited for Smallville in September. I just hope this starts the ball rolling on getting her back in the main universe.

Also, I hope that if the issue does spike, that DC doesn't just automatically assume it's because of Batman.

The nightwing thing might be a bonus. It might mean she is separable from Batman. I doubt they would have the dark knight appearing too much in the smallville, but maybe Steph can be a reoccurring character in this book.

Steph was Batgirl, then gave the mantle back to Babs when she recovered from her injuries. After doing so, she took up being Spoiler again, albeit with an updated and improved mask. Seeing that Gotham was pretty well protected as is, she decided to join Cass in China to help the people there as representatives of Batman, Incorporated. Maybe Wendy went with them.

That's my rationalization for Steph's absence.

If Cass was still in China, she'd more than likely appear in the Batwing arc set in China, but she's not... Nightwing is.
