The Stephanie Brown 'Batgirl' Appreciation Thread

This is it, Steph fans, end of the road. Now that ‘Batgirl vol 3’ has been put down like a wounded puppy (well, not actually wounded; it just couldn’t do the tricks its owners paid for), it’s time for a eulogy.

We got two years of fun, heartwarming, action-packed stories. I suppose we should be happy. I have no doubt than in ten years time, the Steph Brown ‘Batgirl’ will be remembered as fondly by its fans as ‘Young Justice’, or TV shows like ‘Firefly’ or ‘Freaks & Geeks, that were similarly cut down in their prime.

So let’s use this thread to celebrate a great comic and ensure that everyone knows how much it will be missed! Don’t let Steph go quietly!
I want to also use this opportunity to thank Bryan Miller for writing such a unique comic. It was refreshing to see a comic grounded in hope for self-improvement and a better future. Not to mention how flat-out funny it was.

And let’s keep this a positive thread. There are plenty of threads available to rant at this decision by DC (I should know, I’ve started some myself). And please, Babsgirl fans, no schadenfreude please. You won, you beat us. We used to have hope, now we don’t even have that. There are plenty of threads where you’re free to gloat with others of your ilk. Try the DC boards.

Let’s remember Tess, Steph’s littlest, most stalwart fan. It was nice to see a hero getting support from the citizens they protect. Not any more I guess.

Let’s remember the relationship between Steph and Damien. Let’s remember how Steph was the only person besides Dick to try and reach out and help Damien feel happy just being a boy. Now that’s gone too, as if it never existed.

Let’s remember Proxy. What a sad, short character arc she’s had: from a joke character in ‘Teen Titans’, to an bitter PTS sufferer, to an inspirational survivor, to comic book limbo for ever and ever.

I'll admit, I wasn't a frequent Batgirl reader, but I loved Steph's interactions with Damian. It was actually thanks to this series that I finally warmed up to the kid.

^This letter is exactly why I don't like DC. I truly don't believe the last Batgirl was getting cancelled anytime soon. It's sales figures where incredibly stable, losing a few hundred a month, (barring the last issue of course when it lost more due to quitters, reboot and all) and had been for quite a while. The writer had things supposedly planned to at least issue 30. When titles were still being released that were barely doing 10,000 and dropping fast, it would be bad business to cancel such a stable title (22-24 thousand). Stephbat got female fans, lots of them and a huge fandom following that was only growing. This is one of DC's truly baffling idiotic decisions.

Not really since the new Batgirl title is selling considerably more.

Yeah, I'm not upset because Babs is Batgirl per se, but because of what that means for Steph. I liked Steph. She was just so much fun.

...and I can't deny that those Stanley "Artgerm" Lau covers had something do with it.

If that sounds placatory, it is. I'll also pat myself on the head and serve myself cocoa while I read the last issues as they come in.

New Babs better be six shades of awesome and I hope Steph gets some grande moments before she goes, especially if she goes for good (til next reboot). Be a good time to throw caution to the wind and just let her badass her way through the final months, consumate and excellent superhero. No asking anyone for confirmation of her status.
