Green lantern: New guardians

So the news broke that I have another Green Lantern series in the works for DC in September. GREEN LANTERN: THE NEW GUARDIANS promises to be a whole lot of fun and a chance to explore the whole Green Lantern universe some more. We'll be seeing more of the different ring corps and Kyle's going to take on an interesting role in the Lanternverse!

I won't give away much about what's going to happen, but I'd welcome your input.

I'm excited. I love Kyle, and the idea of exploring the other corps sounds fun. It's definitely one of the recently announced books I'm most looking forward to.

This one will most probably be the one comic I pull out of september releases (i'll also be pulling Justice Leauge, but that will be released in August ). I love kyle and glad that the title will feature him and the members of the colorful corpses.

I have just checked the wiki page of this Bedard guy () and the only thing that i seem to have read from his stuff is R.E.B.E.L.S. #24. It was ok, nothing that blew my mind, but I always hear wild praise for the Route 666 series, so we'll see

Seriously, congrats on still being with the GL team. Interested to see what you do with the "Rainbow Lanterns" - a group I was kinda getting tired of, but am willing to keep reading post-reboot and see how another writer handles them.

I actually wouldn't mind a line about where the surviving members are. I also wouldn't mind seeing Controllers, Darkstars, Starlins cosmic characters and of course REBELS cast members. Maybe the Justice League to, if they have the big guns.

In this day and age of getting everything spoiled so far ahead that waiting for the book seems almost pointless, I appreciate not knowing a lot of the facts this far out....

I'm fairly sure the last of The Controllers were killed when they attempted to take the Orange Lantern from Larfleeze.

I don't recall it ever being said that that was all of the Controllers.

As far as feedback, I'd like to see new Guardians other than those shown recently in GL (Sinestro, Atrocitus, Carol Ferris, etc.). Maybe bring in Darkstar Ferrin Colos, Nero, Replikon and/or Effigy, for example.

Or, just bring The Darkstars back. ;)

I'm looking forward to seeing strange new aliens and planets, like we did in R.E.B.E.L.S. That kind of stuff keeps me coming back for more.

I had been thinking about them ever since the term was exhumed for the "figureheads" of the Emotional Spectrum Corps. It'd be nice to explore what happened to the "old" New Guardians in the new title - hopefully, Kyle's "team" will have time to do more mundane things than get ready for the next cosmic... (errr) crisis.

Hope that's Miri with the Star Sapphire ring on the teaser cover. Her appearances in GLC, before Blackest Night, were rather refreshing.

This has me interested, as a fan of Kyle AND as a fan of your team books. I am right in assuming the New Guardians are (a sort) of team?

I am very excited for this series. I have thoroughly enjoyed your work with Kyle so far in Green Lantern Corps—particularly the Weaponer storyline. It was interesting to see such a self contained story in Green Lantern Corps while all of this seemingly “important” stuff was happening over in Green Lantern and Brightest Day, and while Emerald Warriors was following a sort of parallel track that felt relevant to what was happening in Green Lantern without really being essential.

But I’m glad you did it. I loved it. You did a fantastic job of incorporating the personalities of the characters into the action. The pace was nice and fast, and yet the character development never felt squeezed in or forced. The interwoven connections between Kyle, Soranik, the Weaponer, and Sinestro were compelling and left me wanting more. It was an excellent origin for a character with exciting potential.

So I’m looking forward to watching you weave the relational threads between Kyle and the rest of the New Guardians. I’m interested in seeing what sort of role the group plays in relation to the other Corps and the DC Universe at large. And I’m eager to find out what sorts of challenges you have in store for the group.

I know the roster hasn’t been “officially” announced, but judging by the silhouettes on the cover it looks like there are some surprising and, I would imagine from your perspective as the writer, challenging choices (namely Arkillo the tongueless mute and Glomulus the mindless construct). When you’re allowed to talk about it, I would love to hear how and why the members of the group were selected.

For what it’s worth, here are some things I’m hoping to see in New Guardians:

• Clearing up and/or cleaning up the respective powers of the various rings (you’ve already begun doing this in GLC, especially with regards to blue and purple, so a huge thank you for that). But not at the expense of . . .
• Developing Kyle Rayner as a hero unto himself, distinct from the other Green Lanterns of Earth and the other DC superheroes in general; and as an individual, especially in the context of . . .
• Bringing depth to the various Corps, the members of the various Corps, and the relationships between the various Corps and their members. Especially by means of . . .
• Telling stories about conflicts that are relevant to the characters first, and to the “lore” only as a distant and nonessential second (much like the excellent Weaponer story!), while at the same time . . .
• Establishing a unique and important role for the New Guardians within the DC Universe.

Demanding enough? No? Well, then here’s a shameless fanboy’s wishlist:

• Find a way to bring back Effigy, and make him cool and relevant again!
• Let Kyle have some time on Earth with old friends like Radu, Connor Hawke, and Wally West!
• Come up with a new, reimagined version of Oblivion!
• Introduce some new and powerful enemies that don’t wear power rings!
