Those edges were made of shards of obsidian, aka volcanic glass. They were sharper then any sword around the world period.
They make scalpels out of that stuff. As in, "are actually used in modern hospitals for surgery" type scalpels.

Funny thing is, the sagas do mention this kind of mysterious viking polearm, sometimes translated as a "halberd." These days the main theory is that they refered to a hewing spear, that is to say a spear with a very long, sword-like blade capable of delivering cuts.
So, you may not be that far off here.
