Forty Years ago this Month

I bought my third comic book in June of '72, so nothing this time around. But I just wanted to say that silver age comics had the best covers.

Speaking of covers, Bernie Wrightson's cover for 'Tec 425 was thrilling. It doesn't really have anything to do with the story inside and I've always wondered what story Wrightson had in mind when he drew it.

I like these threads, so bumping it back to the first page: looking at the June 1972 gallery, I remember reading at the time:

I'd be hard put to choose between the ToD and the Kull for the best of the four.

Looking ahead, I think this issue of Thor was the last superhero comic I read for awhile

The cover for Grimm's Ghost Stories #5 looks very familiar, but I can't remember anything about the stories inside so not sure I really did read that particular issue.

This is a solid month but I can't say any of these comics have particularly huge importance for me. The comic from this bunch that mans the most of me I guess is Captain America #153. The comic I would most like to own this month that I don't currently own is probably House of Secrets #99, as I have always liked this M.C. Escher inspired cover.

There are a lot of very nice covers this month, though, including Daredevil #91, which is a personal favorite, as well as ASM #112 and Eerie #42. I guess I will still give House of Secrets #99 the slight edge though for my cover of the month:

Ah, now we're getting into my era...these are some of my earliest comic memories.

Batman #243 - The middle of the R'as Al-Ghul arc, and very different from the Batman I was used to from the tv show! But I don't remember being particularly confused by it, I just thought it was cool, especially the "duel of honor" between Batman and Lo Ling.
Captain America #153 - A good jumping-on point, as Steve Englehart begins his amazing run.
Flash #217 - I still love this bizarre and somewhat goofy cover. And for once, it's not deceptive...a bunch of duplicate Flashes do appear in the story, all convinced that they are the original. Fun stuff.

I've read most of the Marvel and a fair amount of the DC stuff that's been re-printed.

I don't think I own any of these books.

June of 1972 was a big month for me in comics. I only bought one comic that month, but it was Justice League of America #100. It was my first exposure to Earth-2 and the Justice Society of America. From that moment on, I was a life-long fan of JSA.

Some modern fans complain that alternate realities are too complicated for comics, but they're wrong. I was 7 years old the first time I read this comic, and I easily grasped the idea that there was a different Earth with different heroes. Some were very similar, like Superman and Hawkman, and some were somewhat similar, like Flash and Green Lantern. Other heroes were completely different. Cool! It probably helped that I had already seen the Mirror, Mirror episode of Star Trek, which featured an evil alternate universe Enterprise crew.

Ditto, so true, and couldn't agree more. You can explain the difference between the Earths in a sentence back then. Nowadays? Good f*%@#in' luck.

Crisis is still the biggest mistake DC ever made.
