Lucifer is the "true" Marvel devil, if in your opinion an angel who with many other angels rebelling against the Creator of the Universe and being cast down into a fiery realm called Hell is the "true" Satan. But Mephisto HAS often been portrayed as being beyond any ordinary demon, almost as if himself truly embodying evil and having a "greater" role in the scheme of things. It should be noted, however, that Lucifer is a rather, well, recent addition to the Marvel Universe, at least as a concrete character. This Lucifer is, however, the closest we're going to get to a true Biblical Satan...

Mephisto got to hang out with the big boys in Infinity Gauntlet. He's the only one of the afterlife people who got to show up alongside Death.

But, then again...maybe that was because, well, his origins were tied to the Infinity Gauntlet itself...at least, according to Mephisto, though it must be remembered that he is not called the Prince of Lies for naught. But I personally think, all in all, Lucifer is perhaps to be considered more of the "true" Satan than merely Mephisto, whose other origin was basically just from a concentration of dark energy left over by deaths of Elder Gods...

    .
I've always thought Satan from the old Defenders was the real Devil -- Mephisto was just another Demon in this book.

I'm not sure that means much – if anything, it was because he was Thanos's henchman so he got to tag along.

It was a plot by the Six-Fingered Hand.

Yeah he's been shown on panel (for sure once, but I think at least twice). He apparently looks like Stan Lee. Also for your edification: The leader of the celestials is called The One Above All, but he's just another celestial.

The Hand itself was organized by Mephisto. The Satan in these stories was later retconned to have been "another demon posing as 'Satan'", which always annoyed me as it weakens this great story arc.

Well, Wikipedia in itself is very useful, yes, but what hundreds of users add to one article over many years, for instance, could be easily erased by a single user another day; that's Wikipedia for you.

The One-Above-All is quite an old concept in Marvel - I think the Tribunal first referred to it when he mentioned to Warlock, "I represent forces that dwarf even your might. My authority comes from on high." The Infinity Crusade series, where the "good" Goddess gathered a group of religiously devout superheroes from Earth in her fanatical efforts to "cleanse" the Universe (the greatest work wrought by the "Supreme One", whom she said the Tribunal served) to aid her in destroying reality. She mentioned that she served only to execute the will of the Tribunal's Master, and that thus neither Eternity nor the Tribunal would intervene against them. Mephisto also appeared, and was not at all pleased at his imminent doom, aiding Warlock and Thanos in ultimately defeating her...and the Marvel Universe endured, in its corrupted state of chaos and violence and demonic evil...

I think Mephisto is the "oldest" (in terms of publication continuity, at least) and maybe most popular devil in the Marvel Universe, and Lucifer (a very recent addition) is the more "genuine" if lesser-known version; at least he has much better fighting skills than Mephisto, which further lends weight to his former angelic past serving God. It is interesting, again, however, to note that often Mephisto seems to be striving against heavenly powers, such as "God" and angels, as if he truly does consider them his actual enemies.

maybe someone already said it, didn't actually read all the opinions, but i always figured there is no "real" hell in the marvel universe, but multiple realms that can be chategorized with the similar function - mephisto has his domain, which blackheart tries to concquer, and there's the devil from the "wolverine goes to hell" series whos realm appeared similar to mephistos domain. you can of course find some others, but i always tried to think of it that way, to me it somehow seems to be the most logical explanation.
