Default CBR: THE BAT SIGNAL: Calloway Redefines "Gotham City Sirens"

"Gotham City Sirens" writer Peter Calloway spoke with CBR's BAT SIGNAL about the comic's direction after the three-part "Judgment on Gotham" crossover and what's next for Harley, Ivy and Selina.

I liked it. I'm interested to see what they do after they split the girls up.

I can respect the idea that joker loves Harley in some narcissistic way, but the last time these two were together, batman had to save Harley from the joker.

Grant Morrisons approach to the joker seems to be a guy that's always reinventing himself and killing Harley was due to Harley no longer being needed or no longer important in his new persona.

Disclaimer: I don't read sirens so forgive me if any of that was addressed. Sounds like a different harley from the one I last read about who was with holly Robinson. Guess she's going back to the old status quo.

I've been frustrated by the book since before Zatanna showed up, it seemed as if Selina had gone very passive and her complete non-action against Zatanna and Talia was nearly the breaking point for me. The interview sounds intriguing but I'd really like the Sirens to get some pay back on Talia and Zatanna, especially Selina against Zatanna. What Z did to her was a complete roll reversal, with Z playing the supervillain to Catwoman's heroine.
I'm hoping to see a far more assertive Selina as this goes on.

What book or story does this take place in? The combination of Holly and Harley. It's mentioned in GCS #1, but is there something before that?

must say i don't really like his approach on the book and his ideas. Seems he is taking all the fun out of the book. I will still collect it, because i like all three characters, but don#t like his direction.

Err, not loving the whole "Joker secretly loves Harley" thing. I really don't like that idea, as I think it takes away so much of what makes the Joker menacing. Ohh well.

Yeah the DCU, post-Killing Joke/Arkham Asylum Joker doesn't work at all with Harley.

Right. I'd prefer they keep these two separated completely, really.

The thing is, while they didn't really put as much attention to it as they did the acesion of the "Death God" persona, but Joker did go through a few more transformations.

First, there was Oberon Sexton, where he was literally trying to play the role of another person to find out who was in the Black Glove and murder them as gruesomely and as funnily as possible. Then, when he was revealed, he was more of a mix of "death god" and the classic--he was still hella disturbing, but had a bit more of a Ceasar Romero vibe to him to balance him out (if you can call that "balanced").

I'd think that would make him more menacing and chaotic--sometimes he genuinely cares for Harley, sometimes he sees her more as a means to an end, sometimes he loves her more because he was able to meld her, sometimes she doesn't even cross his mind at all, and, in extreme cases, he wants to kill her. Taking away even that small silver of love makes him a LOT more predictable.

I don't really agree with that. What makes the Joker so dangerous is that he doesn't care about anything. You can't stop someone when you've got nothing to threaten them with. The Joker loving Harley gives you something to threaten him with. He's at his scariest when you know there's nothing you can use to intimidate him or convince him to stop with. The Joker didn't need Harley before to make him unpredictable, and he doesn't need her now.

Still enjoying this book a lot. Looking forward to seeing what he has up his sleeve but I'm looking forward to the 3 ladies working together again.

Still haven't started Calloway's run, but if comments are to be believed, he seems to be a rather staunch follower of the "mindlessly and humorlessly brutal" take on the Joker.

Infecting babies with rusted nails. Ugh. Sounds like something a generic Arkham inmate would do.
