Hmm, I have been rooting through dollar and quarter boxes lately at conventions and local stores and been buying a lot of fantasy/sword & sorcery/sci-fi type comics from the 70's and 80's-titles like Mike Grell's Starslayer, Arak, Arion, Amethyst, Claw & Warlord from DC, Conan, Kull, Red Sonja, Creatures on the Loose, etc. from Marvel, plus the Elric, Hawkmoon, Corum etc. Moorcock books from First Comics, issues of Warp from First. Also been getting some horror books (Charlton Ghost Manor, Grimm' Ghost Stories, etc.), Marvel horror heroes (like Son of Satan). I have picked up a few super-hero books (rounding out my Power Man and Iron fist run, picking up Master of Kung Fu issues I need). I also found a few Marvel Tarzan and John Carter Warlord of Mars issues I didn't have.

As for reading rather than acquiring, I am gearing up to reread my Dreadstar and Micronauts runs and have been reading a few Dr. Strange issues and a few Phantom Stranger tales.

I started my Arak run out of the dollar bin as well and to my surprise... it wasn't half bad. Between Arak, All-Star Squadron and Secret Origins Roy Thomas did some good stuff at DC in the 80s.

    Check it out!

So, I've been looking for one of these for a while now. I've bid on several on ebay, only to lose at the last minute or because they are just too expensive for me. For instance, one just like this sold last month for $280 plus $100 shipping. So that's more than I want to pay.

over the last couple weeks I've been bidding on an older model, one from around 1970, and even tracked down two of them at a local store. But once again I struck out on all fronts. Finally I decided to give in and I bid a bushel of cash for one ebay lot still going right now.

However, I find myself in the unusual position of hoping I lose that lot, because today, out of nowhere, I found this thing. On a whim I decided to stop in at this knick-knack shop a couple towns over. The last time I was there was maybe a dozen years ago or more and they had just a handful or really crappy comics, but I figured, why not take a look. Sure enough, they still just had those same horrible 90's comics.

Just as I was leaving, though, the owner asked if I was looking for anything in particular. On another whim, I asked if he happened to have a comic book spinner rack. Imagine my surprise when he said that he actually did, out in his back room. He took me out back and sure enough, there it was. Apparently the guy used to own a comic/card shop in the late 80's and got this spinner rack at that time.

However, that place went under very soon after he got the rack, so it's been in storage ever since, almost totally unused. And he wasn't joking, this thing is in fantastic condition, especially the metal topper, which you could eat off of. Here's a closer look at it:

Needless to say I just about crapped myself, but I managed to ask how much he wanted for it. His response? "Oh, how about... 20 bucks."

Also needless to say, I have probably never spent $20 faster in my entire life, I think my wallet was in my hand before he finished the word.

There is a little bit of rust, but it's very minimal, and one of the dozens of welding joints has popped. Plus, it seems like something heavy was leaning on it because a couple rows are just ever so slightly angled, just enough to make fitting comics in it a little tricky. However, it cleaned up really nice and I'm sure that with just a little careful work I can get those tines back into shape no problem.

So damn excited. Now I just hope I lose that ebay auction!

That is damn awesome...I always wanted one of those classic spinner racks and put some key books on and all for a comic book room. I may look myself for one. Great pics and find man.

Awesome spinner rack! That would make a nice addition to any home... I remember seeing that exact same rack in a number of stores.

Yesterday I got a few classic comics in the mail.

A few Ziff Davis G.I. Joe's...Not sure why they appeal to me so much, must be the Joe smiling like a lunatic while whacking someone in the head with the butt of his rifle...all the covers are like this...

    A few Fawcett Lash Larue's #'3, 17, 33, 40.

A couple of Lone Rider's #1, 11, I am 10 issues away from a complete set, but can only locate about 3 or 4 of those. Havent seen #26 anywhere, ever.

A couple of Kit Carson's... #6,7, but they are in alot worse shape than advertised...thanks alot Mile High comics...

I've picked up a few of the Ziff-Davis G.I. Joe books in the last year, and I agree that they're a hoot. Joe is just so likable, and his adventures are much more fun than war should be. They're not easy to find, but they are pretty cheap for golden age books.

Stopped by the local Half Price Books today and rifled through their comics bins to get the following-
    Marvel Treasury Edition #4 (Conan)
Marvel Team Up #112-Spidey and King Kull
    Master of Kung-Fu #83

and a bunch out of their quarter box including:

    Warlord 118 and Annual 1
    DC's Tarzan #246
Talos of the Wilderness Sea Special #1 with Gil Kane art
Richard Dragon Kung Fu Fighter #8
    New Teen Titans #12
Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery form Gold Key #38
    Ghostly Haunts (Charlton) #24
    Ghostly Haunts (Modern Comics) #41
    Grimm's Ghost Stories (Gold Key) #11, 50, and 53
The Many Ghosts of doctor Graves (Modern) #25
    Creepy Things (Modern Comics) #4
    Warp (First) #13
    Jonny Quest (Comico) #8

plus a few more recent vintage books like Viking #1 from Image (I'm a sucker for Viking stories), Strange Girl #1 and 3 by Rick Remender, and 5 of the 6 issues of Demo from Vertigo by Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan-their upcoming Conan run is one of the few current comics I am interested in so I thought I would check out their previous collaboration and you can't beat the price at a quarter per issue.

Seeing the cover to the Ghostly Haunts #41 Modern Comics version was a kick in the pants as, I had just posted in the the Three Comics in a Bag thread about a 3 pack of Modern comics I had gotten as a kid with issues of Judo Master and Captain Atom in it and could not remember what the third book was, but when I saw the cover I recognized it instantly, it was the third book from that 3 pack. A bit of collecting synchronicity.
