Can't talk about Swampy without referencing his complete history explained.
They posted that on 3/30. Makes you wonder if they knew this was coming.
im up for some Swamp Thing
Eh, Comics is a pretty cool guy...
I wish I could care about anything DC does. I respect Geoff Johns craft in putting stories together and his attention to details of past and present. But I find it all so incredibly boring and plodding. I'll read anything written by Gail Simone, and I try to keep trying to like James Robinson, because of his past work, but nothing else at DC is worth reading to me.
Brightest Day just caught my attention again!

I notice a disparity in the cover population for Brightest Day 23–that, of all these characters, it seems only Aquaman will be having a new title. Hawkfan that I am, this seems sad to me. However well-rounded or logical it may be to Geoff Johns to finish BD with the creation of a full complement of nature elementals, I fear it is only Aquaman that we will see in the forefront for a while, while the others pictured here will at best be featured–as usual–as supporting players in team books, or as the occasional elementus ex machina in whatever storyline requires them.

So, put Swamp Thing back in the DCU at the expense of a promising relaunch by Vertigo?
Welcome to the Bob Harras age.

Not sure of that..The first thing Dan Didio asked at the WC 11 DC Panel was "if fans were pleased with the return of the BD rooster " so if AQUAMAN got his title, I think we can expect the same for the others :
HAWKMAN and MARTIAN MANHUNTER are awaited since long as ongoings, not to speak about FIRESTORM, DEADMAN and SWAMP THING..and I'll be personnally more than interested by a new round of HAWK AND DOVE...
The success of ZATANNA, POWER GIRL, Jeff Lemire' ATOM and BOOSTER GOLD proved than DC could spotlights onto their secondary characters with no fear...Let just hope they could handle it coz I still don't understand why GREEN ARROW and DOOM PATROL had been failures..

Get past it.
Dividing up super-heroes that existed in the same universe by genre and then not allowing them to interact with each other was nonsensical in the first place. There was no reason Swamp Thing, Animal Man (and for that sense, Sandman) and others needed to be put OVER THERE IN THAT SANDBOX.
Vertigo should have just been reserved for non-DCU mature books and the DCU-existing characters should have just kept their own DCU series but with a mature readers label.
Initially, this sounded like quite a good idea, as I've always had a soft spot of sorts for Swamp Thing for some unknown reason.
But the more I think about it, the more I realise...this just seems really random. No foreshadowing? No mention of him previously in the story? I'm hoping it'll be a good story and actually make sense, but at the moment it just seems to me like they want to include Swamp Thing just because he's Swamp Thing.
This decision was made well before Harras took over the reigns at DC.
I think I am pretty safe in saying that we won't be seeing too many Harras influenced decisions for at least a year, maybe two. Prior to that most of what he's announcing was well-under way before he took on this job.
Totally agree with you. I'm in the same boat. I just felt Blacket Night was so....forced or something. Too much build up (over 2 years) then the payoff was bringing back several characters from the dead/limbo? Some of which hadn't been dead but a couple of years in real time (Hawkman, Max Lord, Aquaman, etc)?
It was just a little too out there for me. I read all of John's Green Lantern series from GL: Rebirth up through Blackest Night. I absolutely loved Sinestro Corps War. I don't know though, it's like WHAT ELSE could they possibly do with the character? I tried Brightest Day, I really did. I read the first 7-8 issues, but it just felt like another throaway, padded out, stunt-event comic to me.
And while Marvel has their issues, at least their characters are relatively straight forwarded in their history. Yes, I know there are exceptions (Spidey I'm looking at you and the whole One More Day debacle). But by comparison, I couldn't even begin to tell you the history of DC's characters they way things have been rebooted and retconned so much.
I mean look at Superman. We've had THREE, count 'em, THREE origin reboots in the last 6-7 years. Birthright, Secret Origin (loved that one by the way), Earth One (eh...ok, but not so much), and then there was All Star Superman (awesome). SIDE NOTE: I know that All Star Superman was set in it's own 'universe' and I'm fine by that. But the present day-modern DCU Supes has had 3 origin reboots all by himself.
I couldn't even begin to figure out the modern status of Aquaman. Belive me, I've tried to read the wiki page, and it's just too much. Whatever happened to creating a back story for a character and sticking to it.
Then there's the Flash. I read Flash: Rebirth hoping for a repeat of the GL success story and for some reason it seemed very forced again. Now they've cancelled his series leading into Flashpoint.
Wonder Woman? Sheesh. Let's just ignore all those changes.
For many reasons, I just can't find myself caring about DC much anymore.
