I'm thinking that's what is being planned too. On the note of people thinking Jean is crazy/unstable, they're forgetting the real reason she became Dark Phoenix in the first place. It's a middle aged man with a pedo-stache and a busty blonde woman.
I never saw Jean as being either a supervillain or an unstable psychopath in the DPS. She seemed pretty coherent all the way through and it wasn't as if she was acting totally irrationally, she just wanted everyone to get off her back and let her live for once. And she never showed any real malice or megalomanical tendencies, she was just flying around space enjoying her new found freedom and realized that she forgot to pack a snack, that outfit didn't have any pockets anyway so what was she gonna do, starve to death? Contrast that with the Phoenix 5 in AvX, they were clearly flying off the rails almost immediately, trying to mold the world in their own image and impinging on civil liberties and all sorts of horrific stuff. Really the only thing that was "dark" about Dark Phoenix was that she was sort of free of inhibitions and unafraid to walk on the wild side a bit, she certainly wasn't evil in the way you'd associate with most comic book villains.

True that! Much has muddy the waters of Jean Grey's legacy -- mostly fan-fic and hyperbole. The detractors always trot out how much of a murder Jean was but neglect to mention how she was driven to the point of insanity by the very woman who's sleeping in her wet spot. It's not like Jean said "Ah, an inhabited star system... I think I eat their star; wipe out all life here, and no one will be the wiser. Jean didn't consume that star with malice -- it's like you said she wasn't evil She required sustenance. In retrospect, if Jean was aware of life on D'Bari would she have gone planet side and simply had a regular meal?

As flawed as the 90s cartoon could be at times I thought their rendition of the Dark Phoenix Saga was pretty interesting. The basic setup was the same but there were some significant changes that made the conflict interesting.

For one thing everyone knew from the beginning that Jean had been taken over by the cosmic force. They tried to force it out of her but nothing worked.

And when DP fried the D'Bari system it was stated that it was completely devoid of life. And she didn't destroy the Shiar ship that fired on her. She just disabled it so they would quit trying to kill her.

In the end it all played out the same, but now the conflict was trying to kill the Phoenix through Jean even though neither had actually done anything wrong. She just had the potential to. So for the safety of the universe they wanted to kill an innocent person. It was an intense dilemma. Of course they bought it all back in the end since it was a kid's show but still.

On a side note... Remember "The trial of Reed Richards"? No one is still screaming for his head. Yet, Galactus till this very day is still eating hapless planets -- chief amongst his countless feedings was the Skrull home world, 7 billion eaten alive . Jean paid for her mistake with a Kree Ion Cannon yet, she's still is being trolled.

"In the face of the prosecution’s evidence, Reed pleads guilty—but not to a crime, rather to the fact of saving Galactus’s life. Reed argues that doing so was no crime because Galactus is a force of nature and part of some greater plan for good in the universe. To this end, the god Odin is summoned by the Watcher to testify as to Galactus’s origin, as told to him by Thor, who was told by Galactus himself. Odin testifies that Galactus was created at the beginning of the universe, the lone survivor of the end of the prior universe, and thus Galactus is a natural force."

I just don't think Jean really had a chance in the 90s. That kind-hearted good girl personality of hers seemed woefully outdated in an era of totally radical extreme cowabunga awesomeness. Even I thought she pretty much sucked for the most part until I found out about all that Phoenix business. But oh, how times have changed, now you'd be hard pressed to find anything from the 90s that doesn't seem shamefully over the top, and a show like My Little Pony of all things has managed to become a pop culture phenomenon, with a distinctly Jean-like character in the lead role to boot. Time will tell if this recent wave of positivity is just a product of self-delusion generated by the financial downturn, or a genuine shift in societal attitude, but either way the market is primed for a character like Jean to make a big impact with the audience. If only Marvel weren't permanently stuck three to five years behind the times...

Yeah, the 90s were an odd time. The new adjective-less X-Men was the flagship book and with all the trendy characters plus Scott and Beast to remind you this was an X book. And the two women were Rogue, the virginal southern belle who was dieing to cut loose like a catholic school girl unleashed, and Betsy, a hot (sorta) Asian ninja in a swimsuit. Jubilee was kinda there for your regular dose of 90s 'tude and colloquialisms.

Meanwhile you had the Gold team, which by rights should have been able to stomp the Blue team power wise, but they were all the old standbys that everyone had grown used to.

We'll see what side the new Jean chooses to show. So far she's been mostly stand-offish and "I'm not having this". Not that I'm complaining about that really, but when the current X-Men so badly need to be whipped into shape "sweet as pie" probably isn't going to cut it.

I used to watch the 90's X-Men and initially I liked Jean but after awhile I realized that on the show all she was good for was screaming, passing out, being the damsel and the love interest for two men. Plus when I was younger I thought the near peach toned part of her costume was bare skin and I thought it strange so I gave my love to Rogue. Then the Phoenix saga happened and I liked this powerful and confident Jean and when the Dark Phoenix saga aired and I saw what a force of life and power and inhibition she was I loved her. It was because of that show that I started reading comics and came to see that the Jean of the comics was nothing like the Jean of the 90's cartoon and thus began my obsession with all things Jean lol

Ideally Jean's voice is authoritative but gentle, she's not trying to order people around or one up them all the time, she's just trying to convince them to do what's right, but she doesn't exactly suffer fools lightly either. And when she does blow up in your face, that's when you know you've really fucked up. I definitely wouldn't want Bendis to turn her into some bitchy and bossy type who's on edge all the damn time.

I do feel like I need to start educating this thread on the virtues of Twilight Sparkle...

Okay, this is going to sound like I'm making stuff up and I swear that I'm not, but that option just now appeared for me, I went back to my initial post and it's there as well, I swear I'm not blind or anything. When I first joined I wasn't able to go to my profile page, I kept getting this:

peanutsinspace, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

But I could post, so I sent an email to get help and they must have responded because I can see the edit option and I can now go to my profile. So yay!

Yeah I think you need to have 10 posts first before you can start edit your posts, upload an avatar, or any other advanced functions. Just go spam some threads on the main board with anti-Cyclops rhetoric, can never have too much of that.
