I agree with the first part but if we're talking "common man stands up for Spidey" I thought the bit with the crane operators was way more dramatically skillfully pulled off with the build up to the scene as Spidey limps along and makes the first jump. As opposed to "New YAWK" yelling dude which sticks out like a sore thumb.

Best out of all of those scenes I think remains Spider-Man 2 when the people in the train carried him (rather Christ-like, but what the hey?) and they all saw him without his mask yet they didn't care. But I didn't care for the crane scene because I literally think "where is Spider-Man swinging from" is the least important aspect of a Spider-Man story. (Unless it's a joke like in the Peter David "Commuter" issue.)

Yah, that didn't enter into my head when I was watching it, I just liked how they helped him but it wasn't as on the nose as the "New Yawk" guy, and I thought the music and the (literally!) limping run up to it pulled it off, one of Spidey's trademark "Am wounded but must keep going" moments. And there's that great shot where Spidey makes the jump, misses!, and just disappears outta the frame for like 5 seconds, then rises out of the corner of the frame hanging onto the crane. Overall, I just thought it was an excellent crafted sequence and looked great in IMAX as well.

Gotta re-read that "Commuter" issue, have vague memories of it, PAD is always good at finding little corners of continuity and exploiting it for different ideas.

In the end of the film, spoilers:

it's revealed that Connors was aware of a conspiracy to kill Peter's parents,

end of spoilers so he'll probably return in some role in the sequel.

Norman Osborn's health gives him an obvious incentive to do something risky that results in super-powers. And it allows the character to make a splashy return, after a few years as a 21st Century Howard Hughes.

I'm wondering what villains would fit a longer arc about the mystery of Peter's parents.

Aside from Ultimate Venom, the Vulture could be tied to Osborn.

On another thread, someone mentioned that the problem with the parents mystery is that the most obvious answer (Norman Osborn did it!) doesn't justify years of build-up. Is there any other potential answer using top Spider-Man characters?

They could use Noir Vulture, kinda. He has no super powers but is an incredibly creepy guy. Would also explain a lot if it was definitely not Norman Osborn. I think Vulture is more of a side-villain and will most likely be next to a better villain in a movie. Green Goblin should be like the Ultimate Version. I think that'll be the route they go for many reasons.

1) Because they seem to have thing for cross species experiments and monster transformations.
2) They seem to be relying heavily on the Ultimate Comics as source material.
3) Sony would get so much crap for redoing the Green Goblin, period. So, they'll probably to try to lessen it by making him less of what he was before and closer to a different version.

The only other character major enough who could pull this off would be Doctor Octopus. Anyone else would really be reaching into the obscure Spidey villains. But I don't think it will be Otto (especially since he wasn't mentioned in the movie at all).

I think they want it to be Norman to connect him more to Peter Parker's world. Super hero movies do this all the time. Like how, in the Burton Batman, The Joker killed Bruce's parents. Or how The Kingpin killed Daredevil's father in the DD movie. Or Stane killed Tony's parents in Iron Man.

The problem is these kinds of mysteries have never been multi-film subplots in a super hero franchise before.

The Iron Man team were thinking about building Stane up before having him betray Tony, but it seemed more logical to do it then, I guess. And, all those movies did actually have said villain go after the hero originally.

Norman & Oscorp are obviously being built up as the big bads in this story, so I it would make the most sense in they went with another scientist villain for ASM2.

Michael Massee could use a big role. He's one of those really good character actors who never got the big success someone of his talent deserves.

What I'd do, based on what Sony seems to want right now (a trilogy, a Venom spin-off series.)

Amazing Spider-Man 2- This would be the Black Costume story from Ultimate Spider-Man, along with a more traditional Venom Story (Eddie uses his powers to stalk Spidey). Peter meets with Eddie Brock, whose parents died in the same accident that killed his parents. This leads him to a biosuit that their fathers designed. The suit makes him tougher, but almost transforms him into a monster. He gets rid of the suit, but Eddie decides to use it, and gains Spider-Man like powers. Venom uses his knowledge of Spider-Man's secret identity to force him to investigate Oscorp much more aggressively. Peter quickly realizes that Venom is a greater danger than Oscorp.
Flash Thompson has a bit of a character arc, getting used to his transition from High School quarterback to friend of Peter Parker. He eventually decides to join the military.
Spider-Man is able to separate Eddie Brock from the symbiote. The military gets their hands on the suit. This would set up a separate Venom franchise with Flash Thompson as the lead.

Eddie Brock could be introduced as a reporter for the Daily Bugle, as a way to bring Peter Parker to the Bugle.

Harry Osborn could be introduced as a friend of Flash Thompson's.

There might be another villain, an agent of Osborn's curious about Eddie Brock's investigation. Chameleon could fit that role. He would be the guy who visited Conners in prison.

Mary Jane could be introduced as the neighbor's niece, who had to move to New York City from Philadelphia, after her father was arrested. So Peter's expectations would be lowered before he meets a confident bombshell. She could be introduced at the end of the film. Eventually it will be revealed that she as always known that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. As a result, she quickly becomes part of Peter and Gwen's circle. Whereas Gwen may be more cautious, MJ is a lot more adventurous.

Amazing Spider-Man 3- A seemingly healthy Norman Osborn makes his return to the public sphere. Adrian Toomes, a pissed off former employee, attacks Osborn as the Vulture. Spider-Man quickly defeats the Vulture.
Osborn weaponizes the Vulture's flight gear as the Green Goblin.
Osborn may also leak information that Richard and Mary Parker were trying to sell information about Osborn's military contracts to terrorists, forcing Peter to consider the possibility that his parents were not good people.
Gwen finds evidence clearing Peter's parents. Osborn kills her for it.
Spider-Man defeats the Green Goblin. Griefstricken, he decides to quit.

Norman Osborn would never learn that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. That would distinguish this story from the 2002 Spider-Man. And even the Lizard learned the secret identity in Amazing Spider-Man, so it gets a bit repetitive if too many people are aware of it.

In the likely event that the films are successful, I'd start plotting another trilogy to be filmed back to back.

Man, I'd love to see a superhero movie series reach #6. Right now only Batman and Superman have reached 4 movies without a reboot. (Maybe X-Men has reached 5 movies if you don't count First Class as a reboot, but X-Men doesn't center around a single protagonist and First Class contradicts the continuity of the previous 4 movies.) I think having this many movies is a better fit for the serialized nature of the comics. For example, if there are 6 movies than the Lizard can come back as a secondary villain at some point. Unfortunately, I fear that if a single movie underperforms or is awful (like Spider-Man 3) then it will probably kill the franchise. Anyway, I think it would be cool if we got to see Peter grow up, go to college, and marry MJ over 6-8 films.

I also like that the "cross-species genetics" is a good set-up for many of Spider-Man's animal-based villains. The most obvious one would be Rhino; I think Rhino as a henchman of Norman Osborn would be pretty great. I don't think a half-bird vulture would work, though.

Agreed, he's pretty awesome. And one thing that's almost universal in "Amazing Spider-Man" is that the movie is cast well. So if they keep him as Norman Osborn, that would be nifty because he could totally pull it off. On the flipside, and no offense intended to the esteemed Mr. Massee, I'm kinda banking it wasn't Norman because that'd be a pretty big role to cast that early (But he'd be great). Which is, in turn, why I think it's Mysterio - you could use Masse or not since Mysterio is a master of illusions and all, and the randomly disappearing from the cell thing. In the end, if it is / was Norman, they could just recast the role but that'd be weak for Massee who is pretty damn great and I'd love to see him around more, especially in a Spidey flick.

This is how I think the Amazing Spider-Man 2 should go, with the Venom storyline in it.

The movie kicks off with J. Jonah Jameson saying on Aunt May's television that Spider-Man is a menace and that he didn't save the city from the Lizard but was rather helping him infect the city and that the heroics of Captain George Stacy saved the city. Peter heads to his first day of college, irritated. Along the way, Peter meets up with Gwen. They walk to school together, to find Flash talking to a new guy with red hair. Peter is introduced to Harry Osborn. It is shown that Peter and Flash are now friends with each other. Harry introduces his girlfriend, Mary Jane Watson. Gwen nudges Peter after he stares at her for too long.

Peter decides to take Gwen to OsCorp. On the way there, though, Peter runs into an unexpected person. It's his childhood friend Eddie Brock. Peter and Eddie start to catch up, with Eddie actually getting a full time job at OsCorp. Gwen hits the road, leaving Eddie and Peter to talk. Eventually, Peter asks Eddie what he's working on. Eddie says that he actually got a hammi-down project from his father and Peter's. Peter looks up at Eddie after this revelation. It turns out that Eddie Brock Sr. and Richard Parker were working on a suit that cure cancer before Richard Parker gave up on the suit and started working on cross species genetics with Curt Connors whilst Eddie Brock Sr. went off to start doing some new technology, eventually leading to the creation of Peter's web shooters. Eddie Brock Sr. died on the same plane crash that Peter's parents did. This shocks Peter and he decides to delve deeper into the mystery of this suit, thinking it may be the key to why his parents disappeared.

Peter asks if Eddie can let him go see the suit one day in OsCorp. Eddie reluctantly agrees, deciding that it's just as much Peter's as it is Eddie's. Peter and Eddie sneak into OsCorp, where they find this test tube with black goo inside. When Eddie is called over to see some results, he leaves Peter there for a while. Peter quickly takes out a test tube and takes a small amount of the black liquid. He pockets the liquid in his pocket and then Eddie comes back around. Peter says that he's good to go.

At home, Peter starts to work on finding what is so special about the suit that it might've lead to his parents disappearances. Peter, however, accidentally gets some on his Spider-Man suit, which he was wearing while doing the work. The liquid quickly spreads across his whole body. Soon, Peter is encased in a black suit. Peter cracks a joke about he is in for a monster of dry cleaning bill and stands up to take the mask off. As he turns, he sees the sketch of his uncle's killer. This makes Peter hungry for revenge, so he puts the mask back on and jumps out the window. He heads out to find a crime and notices three men trouncing this man. Peter jumps in and takes them all out. He finds one that looks familar. It's his uncle's killer. Peter almost loses control and kills him when Peter realizes those thoughts aren't his but rather the suit starting to control his mind. He runs away, leaving the group of three on the ground, recovering. Peter manages to zap himself, getting struck by lightning. This leaves Peter on the ground, naked and hurt.

The scene cuts to Gwen watching the news and seeing the black suit Spider-Man take out a group of three thugs. The police arrest all but one of the three thugs who manages to take off and isn't found again. Then, her door is knocked on. She answers it and finds Peter with a towel wrapped around himself. Peter tells Gwen what happened, that he'd almost lost control and killed his uncle's killer. She soothes Peter on the couch. Then, she brings up that MJ and Harry had asked for Peter and herself to go on a double date with them. Peter says that he'd think about it but that he ought to be getting home. There is a good night kiss and then Peter leaves.

Again, the scene cuts, this time to a man standing looking out upon the city from a tower. Montana bursts through the door saying that the other Enforcers had been arrested (Montana is Uncle Ben's killer). The man, referred to as Tombstone, says that's unfortunate but that Montana having made it through an encounter with Spider-Man deserves a reward. Tombstone tells Montana that he has equipment ready that might help him take down Spider-Man once and for all. Montana smiles at this and says how soon can you have it ready. Tombstone nods to two guards who each heave up a case, showing the vibrators and the yellow and brown costume. Montana scoffs at the costume but Tombstone says it will make him immune to the effects of the vibrators. Montana asks where Tombstone got all the stuff. Tombstone replies that it's just another mutual exchange with OsCorp.

Peter is shown getting up the next day and receiving a call from Eddie. Eddie tells Peter to come to meet him right away. Eddie tells Peter that OsCorp is frantic that Spider-Man may have used the suit that Eddie was working on and the whole project is shut down. Peter breathes a sigh of relief which doesn't go unnoticed by Eddie. Eddie and Peter have a disagreement over the suit. Eddie says that it has potential and that it just needs more testing but Peter says that Spider-Man nearly lost it and the suit was a symbiote not a cure. Eddie said he was going to get it back with or without Peter. And then Eddie heads off, leaving Peter in the dust.

Peter isn't sure what to do and asks Gwen. Gwen says to leave it and that it isn't very easy to get past OsCorp secruity. Peter pointed out that he did it but Gwen says that it was for the internship and that there was no way they were letting anyone into a closed down project. Peter decides that she's right and goes with her to school. Harry and MJ show excitement for the double date in Times Square after school. After school, Peter, Gwen, MJ and Harry head off on their double date. When they get there, they actually start eating their main course when none other than the Shocker shows up. Peter, after hearing Spider-Man being called out by him, says he has to go to the bathroom. Peter saw an advertisement earlier that the Daily Bugle was offering prize money for pictures (or video) of Spider-Man in action and decides to sling up his camera. Spider-Man has a short battle with the Shocker, when eventually Spider-Man pulls the top off a fire hydrant sending water into the Shocker's toys, short-circuiting them. Then, Spider-Man unmasks Shocker where Peter recognizes the killer. Even now, without the suit, Peter considers killing Shocker but decides against it. Shocker asks how Spider-Man beat him and Spider-Man responds that with great power comes great responsibility, something that he wouldn't understand. Shocker says that Tombstone promised that he would be able to take down Spider-Man. Spider-Man asks for information about Tombstone, but the cops show up and Peter decides he better take off. By the time Peter gets back, he finds that the resturant was evacuated. He curses himself and then heads back home, hoping to process the film.

Meanwhile, we see Eddie Brock sneaking back into the building. He manages to actually show off some martial arts training, taking out guys with guns to get to the suit. However, when he gets inside, Eddie finds a man standing there. Eddie asks who he is supposed to be. The man replies that he has been called many things but that he prefers the name, Vulture. Eddie says that he'll fight him too if necessary. Vulture says that Eddie misunderstands and that he can have the suit if Eddie promises to use it to end Spider-Man. Eddie asks why. Vulture (the guy who was talking to Connors at the end of TASM) replies that it is simply an exchange. Eddie decides that it's a small price to pay for the suit and that Spider-Man had tried to steal the suit before. Eddie takes the suit and leaves. When he turns, Vulture is gone too. We then see Eddie in his apartment. He takes the whole suit and dumps it on his head, knowing, from his notes that it'll increase the strengths of its host and even reflect what the host wants. Eddie decides that no one better to reflect than Spider-Man himself since that is who he is targetting. The suit and Eddie both say, at that point, that they will toxic to Spider-Man, complete Venom.

Peter sends his pics into the Daily Bugle. Gwen and Peter spend the day together, just relaxing and enjoying each other's company. There should be a relationship development scene here between Gwen and Peter.

Eddie Brock is waiting for the proper sighting of Spider-Man on the news but finds nothing. However, he sees that Peter Parker is the first person to come up with photographs of the Spectacular Spider-Man! Brock decides that Peter must have some special connection with Spider-Man and hence decides to go after Peter.

Peter is home by the time Eddie knocks on the door. Eddie says that they need to talk. Eddie and Peter leave the house and head to a park. There, when no one is around, Eddie transforms into Venom. The tongue nearly touches Peter's face. Eddie says that he wants to know where Spider-Man is. Peter says that he knows nothing about where Spider-Man is. Venom says that he must know and that he better tell Spider-Man to meet him at the top of the Empire State Building at noon the next day to confront his destiny and with that Venom shrinks down to Eddie Brock again. Eddie walks away.

With only about six hours left until the deadline Venom gave him, Peter finally makes his new suit after staying up all night. Then, Peter heads to the Empire State Building. There is a fight that breaks out almost immediately. Spider-Man and Venom smash into the roof of another building. Spider-Man asks why Venom is doing this. Venom says that he needs the suit to finish the work on his father's experiment. Peter finally comes out and says that it was his father's too. Venom laughs but then slowly understands what Spider-Man means. Venom howls Parker! He then throws Peter into the street where he hits electric wires. The electric wires hit the roads sparking a ton of electricity off the road. Peter knows what this will do to the suit so he lures Venom from the point where he landed into jumping over the wires. Peter quickly webs both lines and throws them into Venom. This hits Venom and electrocutes him until the light is so bright Peter has to avert his gaze. He turns around and finds only a sliver of symbiote left that crawls into the sewer. Devastated that he might have killed someone, Peter calls out for Eddie but doesn't find him. Discouraged and shocked, he heads back to tell Gwen what happened. Gwen holds Peter as he cries into her arms.

After-credits scene
We now see Tombstone in the room again. Vulture walks in. Tombstone says that obviously the Venom experiment was failure too. Vulture states it is but that there is something good coming. Tombstone asks what it is. Vulture says that they finally have the serum and are ready to save Norman Osborn's life. Tombstone states this is all very good and smiles. We finally see his pale face before the screen goes black.
