Launching in June, writer David Liss and artist Patrick Zircher introduce readers to Marvel's first generation of urban costumed heroes in "Mystery Men." CBR spoke with Liss about the miniseries.

YAWN. More derivative ideas and characters, the sort of which have already been done to death. House Of Ideas, my foot.

After last year's Marvel Project, I was kinda hoping this would be Brubaker-penned. As it is, on the fence...

I enjoy the pulp characters published by Dynamite and Moonstone. They pack more punch than their weak derivations, the superheroes. So this is welcome. Liss already demonstrated how adept he was at writing such characters with the Phantom Detective special and BP.

Love Zircher's work, but this really doesn't interrest me. Oh, well, maybe next time.

    Peace

As Arnold said, Yawn. Liss hasn't impressed me with BlackPanther and this sounds derivative of every other retro-GoldenAge series. If I may put my nerd hat on for a moment, it lessens the impact of the true 'first Marvel heroes' if they are now retroactively johhny come latelys. And how come nobody 'remembers' these other heroes? Okay, nerd hat off.
Isn't DarkHorse filing over the name? Will the title have to be changed to 'Men of Mystery'?
I will read this when I find it in the dollar bins at next years C2E2.

If Liss wasn't writing this, I'm not sure I would be interested. But his Black Panther has been really good so far.

Well if we're using that logic, then Hercules, Gilgamesh, Jason, and Perseus should have the right to call themselves the "First Generation" of heroes.

But really, there isn't a "First". It has been firmly established in continuity that there were lots of superheroes before the Fantastic Four, the 'first Modern Age' heroes showed up.

And that's how these characters should be viewed. There are different heroes for different periods in history.

I really like those character designs, so I'll check this out. Aviatrix especially.
I know Kevin Nichols through a guy that knows a gal. Small world!

SO DC's FirstWave concept using a Dark Horse team name and written by someone not called Ed Brubaker?

Sounds as inviting as a fart in a lift.

So they took Rocketeer, completely ripped of the trademark, made him female, and called him Aviatrix.

The estate of Dave Stevens should be suing the crap out of Disney/Marvel.

If you count the first Union Jack, there have been costumed adventurers since 1914. If we count Two Gun Kid, even earlier. So this story isn't doing anything but showing an heretofore unseen part of the history of the MU, where Masks have been fighting crime since the 1800's.

    Should be intersting.
