I think that was kind of the point, just to set the tone and illustrate that Godzilla felt completely indifferent towards humanity, it felt like the beginning of a Lovecraft story to me.

From my review:
I love Godzilla, I love the man in a rubber suit Godzilla. Comic book Godzilla, or even animated Godzilla not so much. There is something about the physical size, the texture on the costume that I just love seeing on film.
I love Phil Hester's artwork in this issue, he is great at what he does, but his Godzilla is a little lackluster, it is a lot closer to the 90's Toho Godzilla look and thankfully not as corny looking as the 70's Godzilla. It's not has detailed as I would like it.
As for writing, its a Godzilla comic. You aren't here for the engaging dialog, just monsters destroying stuff, which in this issue, there wasn't nearly enough for me.
The 22 pages of this comic fly by way too damn fast as there are pages where there is no dialog just panels of Godzilla, fighter jets and screaming people.
Unfortunately, Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters #1, at $3.99, is not worth it. My love of Kaiju is the only thing thats gonna keep me reading this. I really hope the action and the writing kicks up in issue 2, cause if it doesn't, I can see IDW canceling this after the first arc.
Pull List: Valiant Comics, Haunted Horror, Popeye Classics, Suicide Squad, Uncanny X-Force, X-Men
I might get issue #2 to see if the story develops, but if things don't pick up, I'm out. This book damn near cost a dollar a minute to read. That isn't going to work for me for very long.
Free your soul and let it fly....
I loved it, though I'll admit that it was a bit pricy for not much story. But then again, it's a kaiju book. Kaiju books aren't really in the market for plot. They're there for art, and I think Phil Hester really delivered the goods on this issue, as did Eric Powell's gatefold cover. Great stuff.
I think I'll pick up issue 2.
Locke & Key, Saga, Thief of Thieves
Got mine, as a long time Godzilla fan I was excited to get my hands on it.
While I enjoyed the issue, thought it went by to quick, with not to much story. Im very much looking forward to when they introduce more monsters (<3 Mothra and Gigan)
Pull List: The Avengers, Avengers Assemble, New Avengers, Secret Avengers, Iron Man, and The Ultimates.
I wonder if Jet Jaguar will make an appearance. My fave Toho Monster.

Here is a report of the IDW Godzilla Panel from Wondercon 2011. It comes from a website called Player Affinity.

Man, it's too bad they couldn't get Kong. I would have loved to have seen that.
That sounded like a good panel. I can't wait to see over time which monsters actually show up.
I'm still excited about the main Godzilla on-going, I think it'll be fun book.
"Welcome to the party pal!" - John McClane
Man, I'm really digging Phil Hester's art on this book. It'll be a shame to see him go, but he was most definitely the right choice to kick this book off. Victor Santos' art looks pretty interesting, though. It's got sort of a Darwyn Cooke kind of a vibe. I'll be interested to see his pages.
Locke & Key, Saga, Thief of Thieves
Here is some artwork from issue 2! I believe this is out next week, 4/27.

Angilas sucks... nothing but an over grown alligator.. :p
Pull List: Valiant Comics, Haunted Horror, Popeye Classics, Suicide Squad, Uncanny X-Force, X-Men
Next to Godzilla and MechaGodzilla, Angilas was my favorite monster. I especially liked the way he looked in Final Wars:
