Yay?
Seriously, there's not a huge narrative to Sandman, and what was there always seemed like more of an excuse for Gaiman to wrap his fairy tales around.
The Punisher: I’m going to cauterize your rectum, sealing it shut, so when you turn those delicious Pink Pants™ Fruit Pies into waste products the bilirubin in your feces will leach into your bloodstream and you’ll die screaming! And I’ll watch while having sex with this grateful prostitute!
Trussed-Up Hooker: Blueberry are my favorite!
In other words, what StoneGold said.

Not really familar with the Sandman comic series?
Narrative might not be the best word for it, but Sandman eventually devolved into a framework for Gaiman to tell random stories with the slightest of connections to each other. Some of those stories were great, but they weren't particularly Sandman stories.

it would be an easy series to film you just have it divided into different storylines and have different crews assemble each piece neil could do a great bbc version of it
Ever stop to think what a ratings nightmare this would be? People would actually watch Preludes and Nocturnes, and possibly Death's High Cost of Living. Anything else, especially the shakespeare stuff would be perceived as boring for regular tv and would be canceled within weeks.
The show would work on a channel like AMC or A&E easily.

The first bit, Season of Mists, Brief Lives, Kindly Ones, and The Wake are most definetly a defined narrative.
Unfortunetly you miss out on a lot by skipping the other bits.
Technically, if they were going to do it, they could cut out the majority of side stories, work in the bits they need to move the plot forward from them, or simplify it so they don't need too, and you have a story.
But fans would raise hell over it.
Nothing's gonna happen without a warning
To really capture the feel of the comic, they should use different actors for the same characters on all the later episodes.
