"Wizard" has changed formats, but Augie notices that very little else is different from before, unfortunately. Plus, an Emerald City Comicon post-mortem and five art books he'd like to see immediately, please.

Yes, people do still collect toys. It hasn't "faded away" or anything although it has moved on - once big draws like McFarlane now trade on a few video game licences while their talent has seeped away to the likes of NECA. Hasbro make the Marvel figures now, rather than ToyBiz. Japan still make better toys but more often than not they're also more pornographic. Etc.

Is Shamus just all hype? The way he made it sound was that the new Wizard was reinventing the way publishing was going to be done. No, no, and no, Gareb. Very wrong. Ohhhh, a PDF magazine. Didn't some of the Warren Ellis forum guys do one years ago? I remember Larry Young going on about it.

Oh, Wizard. I honestly feel sorry for the writers of the magazine - they're not even given a chance to shine.

Good insight and rebuttal to individuals who discounted Emerald City ComiCon(ECCC) this weekend for a "lack" of news.
Comic companies will always seek the biggest bang for the buck in making business announcements. You do that at the bigger media cities(NY, LA, Chicago, SanFran). San Diego is a beast unto itself.

ECCC had representatives there from all the major publishers. How many conventions in North America can claim that? My guess is that it's under or about 10. I'm sure the organizers would have liked some company news to come out of the festival. However, it's OK if there wasn't because people had a blast just talking/interacting with comic creators at the con. Isn't that the whole point? I hardly saw any negative press coming out of ECCC. No registration issues, major smells, weather problems, guest cancellations, medical alert, etc.... Plenty could have gone wrong and didn't. That goes for any comic event.

Thank you CBR for your coverage at ECCC the past few years, and hopefully continued coverage into the future.

It's fine to slag them, Augie, but it would only be fair to include a link to the pdf or main wizard site.

I was never one to put a dog to sleep, so I'll let Wizard pass naturally...

I'm not sure it's even really fair to say that Wizard has changed format. It sounds like they're doing exactly the same thing as before, except sending the pages to a PDF instead of a printer.
