Thread: Sweet Tooth?

  1. #61

Default What is the big deal with Sweet Tooth?

I just read the first 5 issues of Sweet Tooth and it was good but I don't know if I want to keep reading from here or not. I have seen a lot of people raving about this book. Does it continue to get better and better?

    Thoughts?

I'd read at least the next trade. Some people loved it from the start, but I know more than a few folk who were unsure after the first trade but came around after the second.

If it still isn't your thing after the second, then, well, you gave it a fair shot!

I didn't really like the first two issues all that much, but it's one of those books that gets much, much better as its world expands. The second trade with Jeppard's story is where I really got hooked.

I had a similiar experience with Scalped, and after I read the second trade, it became one of my favorite books.

This may explain why I don't get the fuss about Scalped and Jason Aaron. I read the first one and it was ok. I didn't read on after. I generally assume if the first one wasn't that great, it won't get any better.

I read the first trade of Sweet Tooth and I feel the same.

Though, I also read the first two trades of Scalped a couple years ago and wasn't too fussed about them; I re-read them a few weeks back and something clicked for me that didn't the first time around. I've subsequently bought the rest of the trades and think it's an excellent series.

Scalped didn't get really good until the third trade. 2nd was better than the first but 3 is where Aaron and Guera hit their stride.

Sweet Tooth was kind of boring for me until Gus and Jeppard made it to the "preserve." After that it all clicked.

Except for one major plot point, there is nothing in Volume 1 of Sweet Tooth that people need to read. At least so far. And that plot point is brought up later, anyway. I think you can start with Volume 2 and follow the book perfectly fine.

I don't think I would go that far. I just reread 1-5 for the first time since they came out and they were actually better than I remembered. I think having context for the Gus-Jeppard relationship and "the preserve" and Jeppard's duffel bag would be beneficial going into vol. 2. You could skip it but I wouldn't recommend doing so.

Yeah: it was the 2nd trade that hooked me.

I was hooked from issue #1 - bought it for a buck when it was first released and have supported the book every month since. Even bought the trade and handed it around to friends who got hooked and started buying it.

It's a slow burn. You have to have patience with it - you can't expect them to blow their load in a story arc. It reminds me of lost, you go further in and the questions change and you become more invested emotionally, in each character.

It's a world full of mystery, evolving characters, with a post-apocalyptic premise that ices over it. I think it's a brilliant book - easily my favorite current book. Yes, there have been series I'll cherish more that have ended, but as in comics still be published, it's the best thing on the shelves I'm reading consistently. Some months a different book might be better, more unique, captivate me or hit a nerve better than Sweet Tooth does, but Sweet Tooth NEVER let's me down, it's always solid - if not the best book of the month in my pull.

The thing is at 30 years old, I'm kind of at a point where I feel I've seen it all, there's no comic that can really grab me like they did when I was 10, or even 20. Even books I do enjoy, I get done with an issue and I'm like "ok..cool ending, next month should be good" but I'm never (not anymore) like " OMG I NEED THE NEXT ISSUE WHAT THE HECK HAPPENS!" Sweet Tooth does that for me, it's a nice nostalgic feeling. I'm genuinely excited the day it comes out and always looking forward to more. Only two books have done that for me in the last 5 years, Walking Dead and Sweet Tooth.

I really need to get Lemire's autograph some day.

Issue 26 is still readily available online if your shop didn't get any. I'm sure you can find a couple other things to buy to make shipping worthwhile somewhere.

Default Have they announced if Sweet Tooth is ending?

I thought I read somewhere a while ago saying it was ending around issue 45, but can't find a link anywhere. Has there been any news saying how long the series will go on for?
