About a decade or so ago, I teased him on a message board (or eGroup?) about the Static trade paperback never making it to Germany that Milestone had been supposed to send to me for being one of the "letter of the month" writers in an issue of Static in the early 90s.
Next thing I knew, he asked me for my address, and I received a signed copy of the newest printing of said trade, as well as the first issue of the then new Static Shock mini series.
That's just how a tiny little fraction of his awesomeness.
I think I'll go re-read that trade now.

We struggled against apartheid in South Africa, supported by people the world over, because black people were being blamed and made to suffer for something we could do nothing about; our very skins. It is the same with sexual orientation. It is a given.

Shocking, and sad. Dwayne McDuffie was not only a great talent, but also a true African-American hero. It's almost fitting that he passed during Black History Month. Can we please have a day to celebrate all his contributions to comics/media?
Oh man, this is just shocking and tragic news. I really enjoyed his work when I was younger (even when I did not even know it was him).
Condolences to his friends and family.
Heart breaking news! When I saw the headline on newsarama it literally didn't make sense to me. I was like his comics career is dead? Dwayne is dead tired of something? Terrible to lose such a passionate creator, and by all accounts a good guy.
Most of my youth was defined by waking up early on Saturdays just to catch Static Shock. I loved his Fantastic Four and was a big fan of his JLA, and my eyes watered up a little when I read this in my newsfeed on facebook. He did a lot of great work with Milestone, and hopefully nothing stops him from receiving the recognition he deserves.
Damn it. Damn it. Damn it.
RIP Dwayne McDuffie.
My biggest regret is that I never really got to formally apologize to him for that time I lashed out at him...
This is gonna mess me up for the next few weeks.
RIP, Dwayne McDuffie.

that's so sad, he's been one of my favorite voices in comics since the original Damage Control (really, one of the first writers I ever took note of by name as a kid) and his work on JLU was IMMENSE.
RIP and God Bless.

RIP Dwayne, and my condolences to his friends and family.
His JLU work, IMO, is some of the best work in animation in recent history.

I just finished watching All-Star Superman. Dwayne McDuffie pretty much defined superheroes for me with his work in animation. It still seems too surreal. My most sincere condolences to his friends and family. Far, far too soon.
Man, this is making recall Static Shock big time. McDuffie truly did make a mark in the comic book world when he made that.

Shocking and sad news!
RIP, Mr. McDuffie. Making my life a little more enjoyable with your work is the very least of your contributions, but very important to me.
My condolences to your family.
