Initially I dismissed the Hex book because it wasn't 'in the main universe' or whatever, but happened across a small run in the quarter bins and purchased them. I was so excited and impressed by those issues, I added the book to my pull and am now trying to track down back issues for a complete run. It has quickly become one of my favorite DC titles and I talk it up to anyone who will listen. So thanks to you two for crafting such a wonderful book. I'm sorry it took me so long to discover it.

Jonah Hex is by far one of the best books on the stands. Can't think of a single issue that I haven't enjoyed.

Kudos for DC for giving this book such support.

Rollo, but it is in the main universe! It's just in the past.

Hex shows up in Crisis, The Kents, Booster Gold, and various other time-traveling titles.

I think Jimmy has stated that to he and Justin, Hex takes place in a 'real' world and not within the confines of DCU proper. I believe, at least, that is how they think about it when writing stories. I talked with him on the podcast in regards to the 'Trail of Time' CD audio play and he thought they should have left Hex out.
Both of these titles are great reads and both for very different reasons, which speaks to writing talents of both men.

in the real world? in the Six gun War, Hex travels with a friend who has a disembodied spirit named El Diablo inside him, who comes out when the man passes out and has some sort of magic fire.

Also, Hex has interacted with Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Booster Gold, been in CoIE, fought a war in the future and even come back as a black lantern!*

*although to be fair, these are all by different writers
Reading: GL, GLC, JSA, Hellblazer, Booster Gold, Jonah Hex, Doom Patrol, Supergirl, Powergirl, Transformers, Vengeance of the Moon Knight

I think that's a fine approach when he thinks about writing the stories, but since he doesn't own hex the character is still an important part of the dc mythos. *shrug*

Personally, I don't think that the hex stories are especially realistic, any more than batman. Doesn't mean that they're not less enjoyable for being over the top - quite the opposite!

Gray is right art is big part of what makes Hex great series. Bernet issues are always the best.
