Wonderful hommage to a really underestimated character, but that Mr Lindsay nuanced very well for us.
I guess DD' fate is to oscillate between street-level stories ( that could be certainly push further ) and total super-heroic stuffs ( wich included already magic and cyber-punk, but there are other fields left )...and he got his own background with occult-ninja cults which is cool too ( imagine a DD story-arc as weird than 'Elektra Assassin' ) but there is one thing that I'll always regret, and this is that instead of DD REBORN, I'd have been more interested by something like MATT MURDOCK AGENT OF S.H.I.E.L.D -as Frank Miller did in a WHAT IF episode and that a lot of people of my generation are still expecting to see ( one day...) but I will be glad to see the old horned head back again, and I'm sure he'll be perfect in an AVENGERS team ( mmh, SECRET actually, alongside MachineMan, Ghost Rider, Cloak and Dagger and Valkyrie, but I disgress...)
Great article so far! I'm happy to see acknowledgement of Nocenti and Chichester, who I think both contributed more to DD than is recognized. I also really liked the Kesel/Kelly run. I hope that this goes further into Denny ONeil's run, which I think is really a big part of DD. Both Miller's stints on the title, along with MwoF, are really good, but so many other creators spent more time with the character with so much less fanfare. Again, Miller's stuff is good, but I think everyone else did a great job of telling DD stories in continuity rather than just overhauling the character for their writing strengths.
An interesting read, but I gotta say, after Miller's take, Bendis's and Brubaker's, I'm burnt out on the noir Daredevil. Things can only get so bad before anyone, even a hero, ends up swallowing a gun. This is a guy who's lost so much in his life, and yet keeps going for some unknown reason.
I would shift directions slightly, making it a bit less tragic, dropping the random love interests and constant Bullseye and Kingpin appearances, and change Matt's setting and profession. Maybe West Coast law professor at UCLA?

@Ian - I love that What If about Murdock and S.H.I.E.L.D. - one of my favourite covers of all time. I will definitely be chatting about it at some stage.
@eh - I still think there's been a fair amount of dreck as well, sadly. But those gems do exist and should be cherished.
@stealthwise - I know what you're syaing but I certainly don't want the quipping swashbuckler back. DD works best in the shadows and like Batman he should be able to find that line to live in without having to lose loved ones constantly.

Forgive the shamelless solicitation but... here is that Typhoid Mary comic.

Daredevil/Matt Murdock has always been the most interesting Marvel U character to me. I too have read it since I was a kid and recently went back and started reading the early issues. He's always been damaged goods. Very complex. For every right he does something very wrong seems to happen. And not just to him but to everyone around him. Those he cares most about seem to be punished whenever he does something heroic. Another difference between DD and a character like Spider-Man is that DD does some really cruel and hurtful things to his loved ones to keep them away from them. It's not enough for Matt to tell Karen Page "let's be friends". He has to tear the girl's heart to shreds.
And he's an extreme drama queen. Every day is the end of the world for Matt Murdock. Worried about people finding out your secret identity? Go ahead and create a 3rd identity to throw them off. Worried about your loved ones being hurt? Fake your death. Of course! Matt Murdock is not just dark, he's insane.

Not sure what he's sayin' about the Purple Man. The original version of the character was a bored kind of dillettante type. The new Purple Man is a super-villain. And, get this, he's really, really, evil!
It made him more, at least to me, more generic and much less interesting.

This article really makes me impatient for Marvel to move past the whole Shadowland/T'Challa Without Fear storylines and get back to some great Daredevil comics.
I kind of like stealthwise's idea of Matt Murdock teaching law school.
I would like to see a modern take on a lighter, less-noir Daredevil. I would keep the internal struggle that is so emblematic of Matt Murdock/Daredevil, but change up the tone and just have some balls-to-the-wall, fun stories.
