This is an old list that used to be posted on the Dark Horse forums. The list consists of the core Hellboy Universe comics with an additional section for the Hellboy Universe novels, and just for the hell of it, there's a section for the Baltimore stories as well.

I'm choosing to define core comics as stories that are or will be collected in the primary Hellboy Universe trade paperbacks. This list will not include cross-overs, guest appearances, Hellboy Junior comics or RPG comics.

Publishing order is based on the first appearance of the first issue or part of that comic, thus The Corpse goes before The Chained Coffin as it ran as a multi-part series before it was collected with The Iron Shoes.

This list is useful as a reading order for the Hellboy Universe, especially for newcomers. You get the story elements as they evolve, a healthy balance of pre-1994 Hellboy stories and post-1994 Hellboy stories, no spoilers, and best of all you can see Mignola growing as an artist and storyteller.

Finally, the colours correlate to the spines of the trade paperbacks the stories are collected in.

Art of Mike Mignola
The best official source of information, and it's regularly updated. The FAQs section is worth visiting too.

The Hellboy Wiki
This website is being wiped into shape by our own Horror Of Sorts. It's still cluttered with lots of film junk, but it is improving very rapidly.

The World of the Horned Demon
This French site is an excellent resource for those that can read it. Full of previews, articles (in particular on the analysis of the graphic style of Mike Mignola), reviews of toys and comics, interviews and even video podcasts. If you are fan of Mike Mignola and a part of the French-speaking community, this site is a must-visit.
For those of that don't speak French, this site has a habit of unearthing sketches and commissions that are hard to find. It is definitely worth checking out. The previous version of this site was BPRD Center Blog.

Multiversity
Multiversity is a great comics site where Mignola's works have carved out their own little section. Called "Mignolaversity," they review the comics, run columns, and do interviews. In March 2013 they ran 31 Days of Abe to promote awareness of the then new Abe Sapien ongoing series. I even have my own column, "Hell Notes" on the site, which is lots of fun for me to write. OK, that's enough awkward self-promotion.

The B.P.R.D. Subreddit
Only in its infancy at the moment, this subreddit focuses on sharing the latest news in the Hellboy Universe.

The Mignolaverse Calendar
This tracks the release of all upcoming things Mignola.

ThunderPeel's Hellboy Reading Order
There are many reading order lists out there (of varying quality), but this is the best I've ever found. It's fairly old now though, and hasn't been updated in a while.

The Hellboy Archive
For collectors out there, this list is probably the most complete ever seen. An absolutely huge undertaking, well worth checking out. Sadly, it is not regularly updated any more.

Untitled BPRD Hell on Earth miniseries ― Next after the Gods and Monsters story arc

I think this is titled "Russia", Scott Allie mentioned it here on CBR in the article introducing Tyler Crook. Although, I guess it could just be a working title or something since we haven't heard anything official. Maybe Mr. Allie will poke his head in at let us know? Please?

I advise reading the books in the order in which they were published. To get more specific or involved in delineating a reading order would require subdivision of the stories in each of the short-story collections—i.e., you would read part ...of The Chained Coffin (Hellboy v 3) prior to reading Seed of Destruction (1), and part of it after Wake the Devil (2). You'd do the same with Right Hand of Doom, Troll Witch, etc.; but that would be extremely tiresome to keep track of. So read the books in the order they were published, which is to say the order in which they were written.

No? I'd say Trevor points out how short-story-collecting TPBs propose stories from either prior or past full-story TPBs on multiple occasions.

So reading the books in the strictest order would be per issue as published. Although I (or Trevor, apparently) would doubt any such strictness to be providing any more or better insight, than just reading the full stories, likely in order of publication.

As I would guess the order of publication would fall in line with the order of how stories would have got written and made.

Stories from a hindsight perspective, or even oneshot-kind of stories taking place at some particularly earlier point (like how the Mole would be) - I take such to be meant as hindsight stuff really.
So in reponse to any chronological reading orders (instead of by publication order) I couldn't see what reading chronologically according to timelines would accomplish better than just reading by publication order. The comics wouldn't get numbered for nothing (on the outside plus on the inner cover once again), I'd say. Although the single issues would do that just that bit more stricter than the TPBs would, from them being assembled collections.

But my own main point regarding reading order lists would be that I always find most if not all Hellboy stories to perfectly be making sense, each and all on their own. Such seeming sort of a pretty big thing in comics I would imagine .
