Default The Hellboy Universe Publishing Order

This is an old list that used to be posted on the Dark Horse forums. The list consists of the core Hellboy Universe comics with an additional section for the Hellboy Universe novels, and just for the hell of it, there's a section for the Baltimore stories as well.

    CONTENTS:

    1. Core Comics of the Hellboy Universe by Publishing Order
Due to post limitations, this list will be divided up into sections.

    2. Library Editions and Omnibuses
This section lists which trades are in which book.

    3. Novels of the Hellboy Universe by Publishing Order
Please note, I don't collect the novels myself. I rely on other people for this information.

    4. Stories of the Baltimore Universe by Publishing Order
This section lists the novel and the later comics of the Baltimore Universe.

    5. Upcoming Issues
This section lists the upcoming issues according to the solicitations.

    6. Upcoming Trade Paperbacks
This just lists various collections that are in the making.

    7. Useful Links
At the suggestion of Kees_L, this section links to other useful lists out there.

    8. Solicitations
    The latest solicitation information.

    9. Dark Horse Digital Store Availability
A list of which stories are available on the Dark Horse Digital Store.

Default Core Comics of the Hellboy Universe by Publishing Order: 1993-2010

I'm choosing to define core comics as stories that are or will be collected in the primary Hellboy Universe trade paperbacks. This list will not include cross-overs, guest appearances, Hellboy Junior comics or RPG comics.

Publishing order is based on the first appearance of the first issue or part of that comic, thus The Corpse goes before The Chained Coffin as it ran as a multi-part series before it was collected with The Iron Shoes.

This list is useful as a reading order for the Hellboy Universe, especially for newcomers. You get the story elements as they evolve, a healthy balance of pre-1994 Hellboy stories and post-1994 Hellboy stories, no spoilers, and best of all you can see Mignola growing as an artist and storyteller.

Finally, the colours correlate to the spines of the trade paperbacks the stories are collected in.
    Red is Hellboy
    Olive is B.P.R.D.
Grey is B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth
    Blue is Lobster Johnson
    Green is Abe Sapien
Brown is Sir Edward Grey, Witchfinder

Hi everyone! I'm thinking of starting reading Hellboy, but I'm really confused about the reading order of the trades. This thread is really helpful, but I've got some questions. What I don't get the most is why in the HC collections of both Hellboy and BPRD the TPBs are not collected in order. For example BPRD: Plague of Frogs ― Volume 2 includes
    BPRD 4: The Dead
    BPRD 12: War on Frogs
    BPRD 5: The Black Flame

Why is that? Are they read better that way? Also I don't see BPRD 9 and 13 collected. Are they gonna be collected in a future volume? Thanks in adavance guys!

Sorry to ask a question as a "new guy," but what is this mentioned above? Is this the Comic Buyers's Guide insert that led into Seed of Destruction?

    Thanks for the clarification.

No, it would be the San Diego Comics #2 issue, dated August 1993, featuring the Hellboy VS Anubis story, as reprinted in the Hellboy: Seed of Destruction TPB.

The Comic Buyer's Guide insert came with a CBG #1070, dated May 1994, so effectively like 9 months later.

Chillingly good stuff besides Mignola, Slint, M, Knut and really big chunks of tinfoil?

Thanks Kees for the clarification. I was new to San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 being listed as a promo appearance. Especially since it was a 4-page story versus that prototype appearance on the cover of Dime Press #4. But it makes sense since it was a handout promo.

What's interesting is in Hellboy Library HC #1, Mignola publishes a one-page letter stating the next two stories are the very first Hellboy published work - and it is SDCC #2 and the Comic Buyers' Guide insert. Supposedly that content pre-dated Seed of Destruction, but was then published later.

Ehm, you mean it makes sense for you to being unaware of it, because it would have been a handout promo?
I'd say it would be likely for anybody to not being aware of either the promo due to not attending the San Diego Con, both as remaining unaware of the cover to the Italian magazine I would think? Let alone the Freedonia/Dark Horse 'Legend' trading cards set featuring a card of Hellboy? Or either the Next Men Hellboy appearance? Or the Hellboy with a coat plus weird writings on the wall poster?
Because they'd all have been published prior to the first issue of Hellboy: Seed Of Destruction coming out?

No, published prior, as the TPB content would be reprinted material.
Eventhough any of the work on either any Hellboy stuff or specifically the Seed of Destruction-like material, might have been started on prior or next to creating any of the other Hellboy-containing stuff that would have gotten published before it, except expectedly the Dime Press cover since that appears to being like really early?
Or what about the coat - potentially becoming like a signature attribute for Hellboy but not within Seed that much yet? Eventhough the coat-poster would be preceding Seed #1, mr Mike describes the poster as for introducing the coat onto Hellboy, eventhough the coat would hardly seem to being apparent in Seed of Destruction all-too-predominantly. Whereas the Anubis-story does feature Hellboy-with coat foremostly if I'm not mistaken?
So it would appear that publication date or either release date doesn't necessarily equate to any of the actual material to be either preceding or following eachother up all that strictly it seems to me.
I believe mr Mike described repeatedly how he had been dreaming of being to be doing at least this one solid story before he'd die, like all of his own, at least as soon as after completing the art but also apparently much of the storytelling to Batman: Sanctum, a LotDK story which he'd been pretty pleased with for a result, a story which was published no earlier than november 1993.
Whereas the unlikely Hellboy appearance of Hellboy VS Nathan Never for the Dime Press cover would have been made in 1992 already - although published later than that, namely in March 1993. And there would be an even older Hellboy convention sketch done at the San Diego Con in 1991, as reprinted in the Art of Hellboy and also the Seed TPB if I'm not mistaken - a fun goofy drawing looking like Hellboy even less than the Dime Press one. A goofy drawing being to stick with mr Mike eversince 1991 somehow resulting in what would be to be the thing he'd be doing like all on his own - as soon as the 'Legend' deal at Dark Horse would prove to being a 'go' somewhere in 1993.
And even then stuff would still be to shift, since right up to the last couple of months nearing the deadline - Seed shifted from being a back-up story into being a lead story, spread over four issues.
And eversince the period between 1991 until Seed becoming a reality in 1994, some images and even stories concerning Hellboy or either Hellboy-like images, had been popping up or seeping through. And why not really? Since it would have been a thing for mr Mike to be working on like more or less, with knowing what Hellboy or either the Seed-story would be to become, or either not knowing such all that much.

I think of it as photos of yourself prior to getting a haircut or prior to going on some defining trip or moving to a whole new place: you would not yet really be the person you'd be becoming later on, but still it would be you in the photo - reality or factuality or photography can be funny that way, I suppose?

I remember there used to be a Hellboy.com chronological appearances section. This had pictures of each book cover, and then a summary of the content. Also, if the book contained 1st appearances of characters or not.

What happened to this content when the webmaster left? Did she take all the content with her?

If you're asking where [url]www.hellboy.com[\url] (as being the official webspace to things Hellboy) has gone, I'd say it's gone (per 2009), having turned into www.theartofmikemignola.com.

I'd say there has also since long been an official forum space, hosted through CBR, being this forum, being not an ordinary CBR forum, but an officially hosted one, as being specified as such, by both CBR as well as the priorly mentioned Mignola site?

This forum will be hosting a slew of information already (try the search function and you will see this forum combined with the initial Drawing Board one dating back to 1997 at least as far as I could tell).
Examples being for instance this Chronological Reading Order list, although there'll be lots of other stuff.

Or try the links as given through the official Mignola site, among which the All Things Hellboy site.

Of course the Dark Horse website will be a great source for all Hellboy-related publications plus cover pics, edition info and even previews.

Another official source for any Hellboy reading would be the Hellboy Companion, made under guidance of the people publishing the Hellboy books, published by Dark Horse as of 2008.

Although I would really think that nothing will be presenting the books or the Hellboy-related continuity as properly or as powerfully or as vitally as just the stories themselves.
Complete with all the first appearances both as any later ones. Stories presenting themselves as only they could.

As if aside of the books, one effectively wouldn't really be needing anything else, except some good lighting or at least enough of the time of day, decent posture, if not some refreshments, a little music and that would be that: joyful bliss eternal.

Been called a 'good egg'. Been told to rock, been told to steady myself. Been told to (please) be goin' places.
Chillingly good stuff besides Mignola, Slint, M, Knut and really big chunks of tinfoil?
Half sunk in the mud, with one eye showing / a cracked smile and hair still growing /
your hands miles apart, as if they'd never met / you were the happiest I'd seen you yet

Thanks Kees. I appreciate all that information.

This was a very nicely laid out visual chronological library, and didn't require much searching at all to piece everything together. I guess when Mignola was changing the site over, the content went with the old site. What a shame.

But I do need to get a copy of the Hellboy Companion.

You sure aren't kidding. But it would be nice to have the old content back. It made it easy to piece together the publication run, with clarifications from Mignola.

Yes you do. There is a wealth of good information contained in that book and tons of great illustrations.
