Default CBR: DC Drops The Comics Code

In a move towards a in house set of ratings for everything from kids comics to the mature readers material of Vertigo, DC Comics will no longer carry the decades-old Comics Code Seal of Approval on its monthly titles.

About bloody time. They've need their own ratings system for years.

None of the comics I've bought from them in recent months has bothered to slap a code on there; I'd assumed they stopped using it years ago.

But didn't Marvel get in trouble for using the same ratings codes as somebody else a few years ago?

Yup. When they first implemented their code in 2001 they used "PG" and "PG+" as a couple of their ratings. The Motion Picture Association of America holds the trademarks on those terms for a rating system and complained. Marvel adjusted their system. The current iteration of their rating system debuted in 2005.

In 2o11, why does the comic code still exist?

Well, the mark of the CCA has been getting smaller and smaller, opaque to translucent to gone. Huh. I hadn't noticed it on any of my titles in a long-long time ... guess it's a good time to see if it has been on 'em and I've just become less observant...

Didn't know that anyone still paid attention to the CCA.

Didn't even realize DC still had it. I'm surprised it was around with all the raping, whoring, and child murders they've had these days.

Yeah, wth. Where have the seals of approval been in the past X years anyway? I haven't seen one in a looooooong time on the cover a DC book. Wasn't even aware it still existed.
Comics were happier before the Internet turned writing superhero stories into fruitless attempts to impress/entertain a small group of ppl who appear to hate comics and their creators.

    Two questions come to mind:

    1. I wonder if the rating system will be on a book-by-book basis or by an issue by issue basis.
    2. Since they said that Vertigo titles are exempt from the system, saying that they will simply keep the "Mature Readers Only" tag, does that mean that there will be M-rated DCU books out there?

    Same here.

Bongo still uses the CCA? That's interesting. Didn't Marvel say that the Simpsons could get away with more than Marvel could under the Codes rules?
