Default CBR: SPINOFF: So About That New Spidey Photo...

Whether coincidence or internet-monitoring extraordinaire, releasing the first picture of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man the same day as a leaked pic reveals Captain America's costume was a masterstroke. SPINOFF explains why.

Haha...was that article written by a Sony exec?

I don't see anything to suggest that, it just seemed to be pointing out that the spidey picture got more buzz than the cap one. Our very own boards illustrates that point even more than the article, look how many responses the Garfield spider-man thread got compared to the Evens as Cap one and it becomes pretty clear.

Yeah, but I dont see how any of that would have to do with them releasing the photo to compete with the Cap photo.

I think it has WAY more to do with Spider-Man being the much more popular character and has 3 recent blockbuster movies instead of some brilliant move by Sony to deflate the Cap photo release.

I seriously doubt it was a coincidence. Hollywood is a competitive business and there's no trick that won't be pulled to get eyeballs on the screens and butts in the seat. And these days, the fight for attention starts long before the movie is released, by building early buzz.

The Cap photo is also not such a big deal when we already saw Evans in costume, on the cover of Entertainment weekly a month ago. This pic adds the helmet, and a fuller view of the suit, but it's not the same thing as seeing the actor for the first time.

The important thing to note is that all those pics look better than that awful, awful Green Lantern outfit.

Yeah, I wonder what the DC execs are contemplating after seeing the positive buzz for the Marvel costumes, Thor, Cap and Spider-man have all been met a lot more positively than GL.

Well, the good news is that since it's all CG, they should be able to adjust it pretty much anyway they want. The bad news is that there might not be enough time. If nothing else, I hope they can make the mask look less stupid on his face.

GL is too much like a naked man... I think girls might like it though.
A lot of girls I know actually liked the watchmen specifically for that reason :D
They should get that GL actor to play it up for extra comedy:
"I have extra muscles now! That's a new muscle, deep in the thigh!" etc.
and then have the partner Jon Favreau always trying to place a robe or slacks on him:
    "Put some slacks on!"
"You know I have a pair of slacks out in the car I can go get for you quickly."
"They say these slacks are fire retardant...Give them a try!"

I think it's due to the fact they are filming the movie right now and it's better to release their own official images before the inevitable spy photo. They released the first Spider-man costume photo back in early 2001.

I think releasing a photo a year and a half before the film is going to be released is a bit ridiculous, the hype will start building far far too early and once the film is released there will so much expectation from movie-goers that it will most likely end up disappointing everyone.
