Default Is the Joker ever described as wearing makeup in the comics?

The Dark Knight movie referred to the Joker as someone who wears makeup as opposed to the usual portrayal of someone exposed to toxic chemicals.

Are there any comic stories that describe the Joker as wearing makeup or is this an idea that's exclusive to the movie?

Yes. He has occasionally worn flesh-tinted make-up to pass for normal.
'The marquis. Well, you know, to be honest, he seems a little bit dodgy to me.'
'Mm,' she agreed. 'He's a little bit dodgy in the same way that rats are a little bit covered in fur."

I believe there have been characters who refered to Joker wearing make up without knowing that his skin was really white, but in terms of why he looks the way he does, his skin has always been white and his hair has always been green via falling into a vat of chemicals.

Not ALWAYS... Death In The Family shows him as a normal person with a gigantic smile.

I don't seem to own that anymore. Any scans?

    He's wearing make-up there, isn't he?

Other than that, he puts on lipstick in the Dark Knight Returns, that's the only sort of related thing I can think of.

Yeah, that's one of those times he wears flesh-tinted make up to pass as normal I mentioned.

How did I miss that? Is it stated in issue?

Not really. He's never shown to apply any make up. But considering that it is generally well established that his skin is stark white...

......god, I loved Aparo's Joker. No one's mouth should ever look like that and it should look idiotic, but dammit Aparo pulled it off so well.

In the comics, the Joker wears make-up to look human. In the movies, the Joker wears make-up to look like the Joker.

I like the lipstick idea. Technically, it doesn't make sense for his mouth to have been left red when the rest of his skin bleached down.

I don't have my copy of DKR on hand, but isn't that poison lipstick he uses to kill one of the talk show guests?

Yes, but when he is in his Arkham cell he's shown with white lips.
