Why did they recon the great lakes avengers?

The great lakes avengers mini was funny but annoyed me at the same time. It's like they reconned the early stories. In the early stories the gla were like the 80s justice league, funny but could still fight to the end.

Check out the wca issues with them then look at the new version. The 90s team saved wanda, cap and she-hulk, fought the east team to a stand still and really hold thier own in a fight. That's one of the things that lead to cap and iron man to ok them as an avengers team. They were even part of the big battle in jla/avengers.

Look at today, They can't fight at all, in the deadpool on-shot it said it was thier first win yet they won many times in the 90s. They are awful in a fight.
It's like the wca issues were reconned away.

You can still make them funny without making them wimps guys. look at the 80s justice league. They can still be losers and throw a punch.

In part, they are sort of played off as a joke.

But I think the simple truth about the GLA is that offensively, they're not that powerful a team.

Mr. Immortal can't die, but is otherwise just a street level person. Doom Man can become a Door. Flatman stretches. All of those abilities actually allows them to take it, but not necessarily dish it out.

The exception was Bertha, who at least has superhuman strength (and of course Squirel Girl, but she came later). So once they are forced to deal with a threat at a certain level (again if they are minus SG), they are going to struggle. The fact that they did as well against Maelstrom is pretty dam impressive, collectively they don't have a whole lot metahuman level offense (or weaponry to compensate for that).

None of what you describe is a retcon.

I think they didn't really become joke characters until after they appeared in some Deadpool issues. And since there aren't that many characters in that vein in the MU it stuck.

The GLA are sort of serio-comic characters.

They want to do good but thier powers arent that awesome. After the mini series they hooked up with Squirrel Girl (a walking in joke) and now tend to be written as straight up farcial characters.

They could use these characters in a dramady like JLI, but I really think only Keith Giffin or DeMatties could pull it off. JLI style dramady is harder that it looks to pull off IMO, since all of the really funny bits there are character based.

GLC came pretty close though but was kinda too heavy handed with the in jokes.

I don't think it's fair to say the GLA was really ruined by Slott's GLA book. It was a good story, and he made the characters a lot of fun.

I think they serve a specific niche. Not every team has to be the Avengers or the JLA. The GLA serves a certain creative niche... and that's allowed them to show up here and there more often than a lot of other more serious heroes out there.

The GLA beat Maelstrom in their mini... he's potentially one of the most powerful foes the Avengers have ever faced... them beating him in no way weakens the characters... it just makes them stronger.

I loved the GLA mini and would love to see more of them.
