For Movie: Spirited Away

For series: Definitely Avatar the Last Airbender. This addictive series sets the standard - amazing and gripping story with unique characters, strong character development and filled with history, philosophy, politics, and numerous cultural references. It also pays homage to the many series that came before it. The writers are geniuses.

In second: Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. Dark, well written, and entertaining.

My personal favorite is Darker Than Black, I absolutely loved it. You have to stick to it for a few episodes however, as it's quite confusing when you start watching it. I couldn't care for Season 2 much, I liked it, but...for the wrong reasons. The OVA's were good IMO.

Yeah, Avatar: TLA isn't an anime and was produced in the U.S, however it does hold some anime influences much like Thundercats did.

I'm not even sure how influenced it was - stylistically speaking, nothing about it was especially anime-like.

People just kinda assumed it was an anime because it actually had good writing an followed a coherent myth arc.

What I nominate this time:
Elfen Lied: Good show, the story of the cat lady is likable, and I still can't get over her reminding me of Magneto
Shingetsutan Tsukihime Weird series, but the characters are fun, pacing is nicely made
Black Lagoon
Devil May Cry: I get many don't like it, but what would I say? It doesn't have the same level of wtf? endings plenty of series suffer from, Reuben Langdon voicing Dante in the English dub is a plus cause man is his delivery great, it's short, easy to follow and very enjoyable
Both Fullmetal Alchemist series

Oh, and Sword of the Stranger, which still needs more respect.

Uhh yeah, about good writing, if that was a strong suit for anime in general I'd initially assume Spectacular Spider-Man is anime

I wouldn't credit the following for having good writing:

• Naruto: I still like it, but it has plenty of continuity faults, lots of corny dialogue, plenty of stuff just doesn't make sense within story. Movies are awful
• Bleach: If only Kubo gave better care for his main characters, didn't repeat a base of a plot shortly after getting through with it... .At least the movies are good
• Toradora: The cliche of the guy who falls in love with the girl hitting him too much was never good
• Haruhi Suzumiya no Yutsuu: I'll remember how funny it was when my second brother tried explaining the story to my youngest brother with "The story doesn't make sense" mentality. My kid bro stated it many times, Haruhi has no coherent story, the brother who introduced us to the series explained the spirits, her melancholy, and stuff, ending explaining it with "WTF? This really doesn't make sense"
• Pokemon: Meet new people and Pokemon, save Pokemon from Jesse, James, & Mewoth, leave new friend behind, episode ends, this is the formula used for maybe 98% of the episodes. Bad example, I know
• Shaman King: Much as I love this show, I can't get over how stupid it is to hit Choco-Love hard cause he makes bad jokes, the concept of jokes is silly, its execution doesn't help make it funny, and that takes a big part of the series
• Kodomo no Jican: Maybe not as bad in writing as I feel, but it's awful and unbearable

As far as seinen series go, I think Wolf's Rain, Monster, and Mushishi all deserve a good look. The first two had great plots, although Wolf's Rain takes a while to get going and does remain inconsistent throughout. Mushishi is a beautiful, ambient masterpiece and is just so different from everything else put out during the decade.
