Well I don't know what the "best" anime of the decade was, but my favorite was without ANY doubt the Death Note series (the "relight's" included).
But most suprising was the incredible awesomeness of Afro Samurai and it's sequel-movie-thing. I would've never expected that concept to work that well. So those would be my picks for best anime, although to be fair Code Geass, Sword of the Stranger and Samurai Champloo and....okay, no point in doing that. Death Note and Afro Samurai it is.

I go with Clannad as one of the stuff I liked from the past decade.

I personally enjoyed both the Animatrix and Batman Gotham Knight movies. I thought they were nicely done with the different styles of animation for each short.
Sword of the Stranger is a great movie with great action and attention to detail. I liked the fact the Ming soldiers were speaking Mandarin while the rest of the movie was in Japanese. And as far as a great series I would have to go with Shigurui Death Frenzy. Its a real gory series with a great story and awesome characters with lotsa samurai blood and guts

I'm making my way through Gankutsuou, the Count of Monte Cristo adaptation, and I would put it against any of the best.

Does FLCL count? I know it started in '00, but it ended in '01. If it does, I'll throw my vote out to that. Probably my favorite anime of all time.

If not, I'll probably give it to Kino's Journey. Some people didn't seem to enjoy it very much, but I loved it and found it's nigh meditative like narrative very interesting. Probably my funnest Guilty Pleasure anime would be Panty & Stocking with Gaterbelt.

Sure, you can count it in. One other anime got qualified in here anyway despite coming into the decade from a time that is just right before it.

I've been seeing the Panty & Stocking with Gaterbelt name around a lot in many places I go to. But I don't know what the deal with it is and I haven't seen it.

If we're doing that, I'm going to give the disappointments of the decade to the animes that were adapted from manga and went south with their direction.

    Stuff I have in mind.

    Black Cat
    Claymore
    Vampire Knight

Because of the way they went out and 2 of them deviated from their manga counterpart.

I must be the only one who likes Clannad. Unless there is someone else who shows that they do too.

Extending on what I said in my selection. Clannad, and add to it the second season Clannad After Story. Clannad/After Story stands out. Which makes me feel like I can say it is among the best animes in the last decade. It blew me away the further I went deep into the series. Whats amazing is that alongside the primary characters, the secondary characters have a big impact on the series as well. Something that isn't easy for many other shows to do. Then how the show gets you on every type of feeling and emotion. It has the moments that can make you laugh and the moments that can make you cry. Clannad has it all. No other anime does it like Clannad. The animation is very good and the story gets into a number of developements where every major character got their time to shine. This anime gives a lot to satisfy. A fun and enjoyable series.

I liked what I saw of Clannad, though I never did finish it.

I mean, I didn't find it mindblowing or anything and as a romance comedy it didn't grab me the same way, say, Toradora did. Still, I liked much of the cast and Tomoya was a bit unusual as main characters go. The pranks he'd play on his friends were hilarious.

    Plus, there was these two.

It's a very strange beast. A lot of people describe as The Powerpuff Girls on crack, and I guess that's a decent enough description. It's insane and out there like almost nothing else I've ever seen. It doesn't have some of the depth that I feel other Gainax original shows have, but it's a fun watch.

Saw the first five episodes today. (Or rather the first ten, since they're all double episodes.)

It's certainly not conventional anime, though occasionally I wondered if they didn't immitate the western cartoon style too faithfully. The reason I watch anime in the first place is partly to avoid the kind of stylistic approach and over-the-top insanity PaSwG runs almost entirely on.

PSwG is...unique. At the very beginning it's-a-love-it-or-hate-it due to the fact that it's humor is extremely crude that seems to remind me of Ren and Stimpy and Beavis and Butthead. A sample is simply this; they transform by pole-dancing.

And then episode six hits with one of the greatest fights of recent history.

Best of the decade ? Talk about a tough question....

Comedy/love : Lovely Complex. School Rumble could have been the winner here but i'm kinda mad at the manga writer. (unfair i know cause we talk about the anime here but well..) What a waste really, such a funny story with pleasant characters but the story just goes nowhere at all. In the anime of course but, and that's why i'm kinda displeased, even in the manga. No real end. (sorry, just a little rant) Oh and Toradora was nice too.

Comedy : Seto No Hanayome. Haven't seen it yet ? Do it. Do it NOW !! Fumoffu is a close second.

Action/Mecha : Full Metal Panic. Just a well done show. Very well done. Huge fan of Macross here but i didn't like that much Frontier for being honest.

Sport : Cross Game. Not quite only about sport. Very nice story.

Shonen like : Gintama. Weird category name maybe but i'm sure you know what i mean. Stuff like Bleach, Naruto, One Piece...very long, full of fights and mostly for boys.

Let's not forget : Sasameki Koto. Another weird category name but...Let's not forget this one. The first episode of this show is one of most well done and well written stuff i have seen about love between young women, teenagers.

There is so a lot more categories of course but that will do for now.

I really loved watching Gungrave. I watched it not expecting much but I loved it. I found watching the friendship of Brandon Heat and Harry McDowell evolve from youth all the way to Harry's eventual betrayal to be very compelling.
