Yes, Peter Milligan's Hellblazer has been truly awesome. The best Hellblazer stories in decades.
I hope he stays on for AT LEAST ANOTHER year. His characterizations are awesome.
Epiphany is an amazing character... I hope she lives beyond Milligan's run.
What I've read of Milligan's run (first two or three arc) has been utter shit. I'll go back and read it in large chunks when it's done, but right now I just want it done.
There is no way this guy can compare to what's gone before. Better than Diggle or Carey, really?
I've been a Hellblazer fan for a while, but I always waiting for the trades. It's been so good lately, though, that I'm back to the singles issues. Milligan's run has been great, and the art's been fantastic. Along with the City of Demons miniseries, Hellblazer has been rockin'. Don't know what's going on, but I hope they keep it up.
I don't think I ever finished Carey's run, as I moved and never got the 200th issue. This is FAR FAR better than the horrid Azz run.
I've been reading HB since the beginning, and I have to say that I've found Milligan's run to be a mixed bag at bag at best. I like his overarching theme-- John is feeling so over-the-hill, desperate, and old that is trying to cling on to any human contact he can find-- but the execution has been all over the place. A lot of that falls at Cammo's feet-- he's drawing John throwing down magic like Dr. Strange, complete with finger gestures. (Even Pete is half-ignoring the rules of magic in HB: it takes time and a great deal of preparation, and there is always a cost, generally a great one. So far, John's lost a thumb. Magic should be much harder for John after Diggle's run, not easier.) I've been much more pleased with Biz' work. I do feel that the last and current arcs of Milligan's run have been far superior to the few that had preceded, though.
Diggle's run was a hell of a lot better. If I have to rank HB writers, Diggle is third behind Delano and Ennis. Of course, it's not that hard when you have Leo Manco as your artist.
I'm pretty excited about this.
But I have to say that I hope that Milligan keeps on writing this series as long as possible.
Because this is the only way to keep that marriage going.
Epiphany is a classic example of what I call a "Writer's favourite". This kind of characters tend to die, be put on a bus or be otherwise abused by following writers.
It will be inevitable here.
But for now, I am happy.
To those who claim that the general public thinks of Batgirl as Barbara Gordon, let me tell you:
The general public thinks of Batgirl as "just like Supergirl, only for Batman, right?"
I've read the first 2-3 arcs by Milligan and I thought they were shit compared to previous arcs by Diggle.
Wow, I'm surprised that more people aren't liking Milligan's run. He brought me back to this title. I'd been reading the trades off and on and Milligan got me buying the floppies again.
I like what he's doing better than Carey (who's work I generally love) and Diggle.
If you're not reading Unwritten you should be.
