Default CBR: Abnett Makes Things Dire for the "Annihilators"

DnA gives Marvel's cosmic fans two stories in one book with "Annihilators." We spoke with Dan Abnett, the "D" in DnA, about the book and the one-shot setting the stage for it, "Thanos Imperative: Devastation."

The supporting cast of "Annihilators" includes both individual Dire Wraiths and their old enemies, the cyborg Space Knights from the planet Galador. "There is a pretty interesting character we're bringing in who is the go-to-guy for the Dire Wraiths. He's responsible for getting them back into play," Abnett revealed. "Also, inevitably, the Space Knights will be involved in this because they were always enemies of the Wraiths. Although we can't touch on Rom by name because he belongs to another company, the Space Knights legacy (which Marvel owns) is part of this and will certainly continue to be explored in this story."
Can't they just have Rom in human form and call him "Artour"?

So, I'm definitely looking forward to the Annihilators and Rocket & Groot, and will certainly pick them up because DNA's cosmic stuff is tons of fun. However, I can't help but be slightly disappointed as a superheroine advocate. One of the things I loved most about GotG was having all those kick-ass superheroines around. Mantis, Moondragon, Martyr, Gamora... this ladies were dangerous and well-integrated into the book. Now there is nary a female in sight.

It looks like a couple may pop up briefly in the Groot & Rocket side of things, but I'm really hoping they all land somewhere. (Okay, I know Pylla-Vell is dead, but there's always hope. I'd love to see a comic featuring the space opera adventures of Moondragon and Phylla!)

Shouldn't they have been done as two series so they can judge what fans like to see more? I mean I'd buy both and this is actually cheaper for me, but I'm sure there will be some that just buy one and not the other.

I really hope to see them continue. The cosmic stuff really should have had the Infinity Gems used as an event, not a story arc in Avengers.

Well now, that's comforting. The one-shot isn't just wrapping up TI (which we assumed for a while was also wrapping up this particular cosmic era at Marvel), but helping launch ANNIHILATORS.

Yeah they really screwed the pooch with $4.99 pricing because it guarantees that not a single new cosmic fan will be made from this series. Thanos Imperative didn't sell very well at $3.99 despite being about the major cosmic villain. So a $4.99 series certainly isn't going to sell to anyone but die hard existing cosmic fans. They should have just cut their losses on Rocket and Groot, which they know was going to fail sales wise, and tacked it on as a bonus to a $2.99 Annihilators book. That might have drawn some interest from non cosmic fans.

I'm really looking forward to this. I was afraid that Quasar would vanish again after Thanos Imperative.

Very disappointed that they stapled Rocket Raccoon & Groot to the Annihilators series.

I liked GotG due to all the quirky and interesting characters. Annihilators is just the dull heavy hitters.

I planned to happily buy the RR/Groot mini. But paying $4.99 for only half a book I care about? Not sure.

Surprisingly, I agree with Beast. The Annihilators are a bunch of severe bores. I mean, I love Beta Ray Bill because of those Simonson issues, but he was never created to be the charismatic action hero. Anyway, the Accuser shouldn't be on this team. His wife is approximately one thousand times more powerful. Still, I'll read the series for Bill and for the Dire Wraiths, a villain I love. I really wish Rogue were on this team so she could kiss one again.

The only thing whipped is anythng's ass that gets in Ronan's way!
See him mow through Cancerverse crawlies in Thanos Imparitive...and he's the least powerful member of this new team!

I agree with this. I would definetly buy this book if it had a better gender ratio. Too much of the same is boring.

And yet, none of the female characters of the previous series would work here, they're not powerful enough for the premise of this team. The only one who would work is Strontian, and she's in prison for killing prisoners of war.
