Default CBR: On The Set of "Thor": Jaimie Alexander

The fiery foil of Asgard's favored son, Jaimie Alexander plays Sif in Marvel's "Thor," and was eager to explain how her heroine is tougher than Wonder Woman during CBR's visit to the movie's set.

I met Walt Simonson recently. I totally geeked out and I think he thinks I'm a freak!
No, it's more like "The actress playing warrior woman Sif (a character I didn't create) geeking out over ME? What parallel universe did I fall into and can I stay???"

Nice interview. I enjoyed "Kyle XY" when it was on, so I like Ms. Alexander.

Let me be the first Wonder Woman fan, however, to point out that Ms. Alexander's comment on the comparative strength of the two characters shows that she doesn't know much about WW! Diana is much, much stronger than Sif.

I do wish that the Thor/Sif relationship was more than "Platonic" however, and closer to what it usually is in mythology and the comics.

She wasn't talking about powerlifting, but rather their respective roles as a "strong female characters." Because Sif doesn't go into battle dressed like a prostitute.

    Default WW vs Sif

Kinda futile being a self proclaimed "strong role model for young women" when NOBODY has ever heard of your character "Sif" outside of Thor comics and yet every young woman knows exactly who Wonder Woman is and loves her.
Perhaps it's because in fact they like the idea of a woman who is perfectly comfortable with her sexuality and doesn't need to hide her self under armour...
It's Diana's boldness, confidence and total unabashed belief in who she is and what she stands for that transends any juvenile and shallow comments by others regarding her looking like a prostitute...

    She doesn't, eh?

As for "strength of character", Sif is entirely defined by her relationship with Thor and his stand-ins (Eric Masterson and Beta Ray Bill).

Ah, well, apparently the movie version of Sif isn't dressed like that.

And did she get it on with Beta Rey Bill in the comics?! Holy crap, that's just wrong...

yet every young woman knows exactly who Wonder Woman is and loves her
90% (or more) of young women have never read a single Wonder Woman comic. Most of them couldn't tell your her real name. You are right in that everyone knows who she is. But everyone knows Supergirl and Batgirl, and to about the same degree.

This whole "name recognition" thing inevitably comes up in relation to comic-based movies, but usually people fail to distinguish between (A) simply knowing a character's name and (B) actually knowing anything of substance about the character besides the name and actually caring about the character on some level. Because (A) alone won't put butts in the theater seats.
