i love the penguin. danny devito is what made me love him as a little kid.
so much so , that for a show and tell we had to pick our dream job. i said either a paleontologist, or the penguin. because i wanted to kill batman.

i even have the picture i drew for it still, of me as the penguin, about 6 years old, with bright red hair and freckles shooting batman with an umbrella.

i have no clue why i was so amazed with him as a kid, but still is one of my favorite villains.

    Ah, Ozzie.

Not exactly my favorite Bat-Villain, but far from the bottom of the heap.

Little Known Fact: Pre-Crisis Penguin actually had a superpower. Detective Comics #541, he walks around the South Pole (and even swims in the water!) for hours on end in nothing but his trademark tuxedo and top hat. In comparison, Batman almost went insane from chasing Penguin through the blizzards even with a zillion layers of thermal insulation underneath his costume.

Mind you, no explanation is given for his apparent Mr. Freeze-like ability to freezing temperatures. Batman simply notes with surprise that "he's... immune to the cold!"

I've always been a big fan of the Penguin. Burgess Meredith, Danny DeVito, even Paul Williams voicing him in BTAS, I think they all did great jobs with the character.

He is criminally underrated these days.

You should read the Penguin stories written by Alan Grant in Detective in the early 90's. They were brilliant, and drawn by the great Norm Breyfogle:

Even Burton's version has a charm and a twisted romance. Not,my ideal version but it was enjoyable in Batman Returns film.I also loved the DeVito appearence/comic book personality combo in B:TAS. I was one of the few people that prefered this over the revamp in his appearence in TNAB.

NOTE:Although "The Batman" series used the grotesque DeVito style,i dislike this version only because i feel that Penguin's design miss the charm and the elogant eccentricity that B:TAS original design had.

Hilarious thing about that image... The Source posts it saying "Man David Finch is such a nice guy and loves everything Batman...as evident in the cover for issue 4!"

Me and other people comment along the lines "Thats Andy Clarke... get your shit together"

    and it magically disappears.

Oh i agree. I dont really dislike the Batman returns version, he definitely has charm i guess hes just not my favourite Cobblepot. Also I loved the BTAS Penguin, Paul Williams really made it.

    Burgess Meredith for the win.

This is my kind of thread.

Growing up, Penguin was always my favorite Bat villain. And as with most of my Batman beginnings it all started with BTAS. Maybe it was his trick umbella weapons, maybe his charm, but there was something about this "gentleman of crime" that really intrigued me...even more so than more popular villains like Joker (who's become kind-a one note as of late but still). Heck Penguin was one of the "Big Four" of Batman for the longest time (for me he still is) Unfortunetly he's fallen off of that boat for most Bat fans... Replacing him in the "big four" are people like Two Face and Ra's al Ghul. Heck some people prefer some characters like Black Mask simply because he looks cool (even though he kind of seemed like a poor man's Penguin at one point).

The way I see it, where Joker is the anti Batman, Penguin is the anti Bruce Wayne. Bruce is handsome, generous, and seems to even forget that he himself is very wealthy. Oswald however is pretty ugly, greedy, and feels the need to throw it in your face that he has more class than you.

I didn't really like Burton's take on the character, even though to some it made the Penguin "an interesting character". To me Burton's Penguin is in name only, and could have even been an original character...Max Schreck was actually closer to Penguin in terms of personality... I don't relly care for the deformed, sewer dweller, flipper hands look that Burton started. I instead prefer the long nosed, balding, fat normal man that he started out as (especially since he's not one of the Arkam crazies). However I still will take the over done mutated Penguin if they get his personality right...

I wish to see Penguin get some justice in the Nolan Batman movies, but it seems Nolan doesn't like Penguin (some say he's too "unrealistic" whereas I think he's more "realistic" as is than most Bat-villains...even Joker [who still had to change aesthetically to fit in]) Heck, he's the kind of crime boss who will be completely different from Falcone, Maroni, and whoever else they think of. Penguin has his personality quirks that make him different from you average mob boss. He's the kind of guy who can order someone to be brutally murdered and then go the the opera right afterward. He relies more on manipulation than fear...I swear, if Penguin is not in the Dark Knight Rises I will only see it 15 times...the day it comes out...
