Default DC MOVIES: Mega-Discussion Thread *SPOILERS*

The Green Lantern film and Nolan and Synder's Superman film have been getting mixed reception. Some like the Green Lantern trailer and the things they hear about the upcoming Superman film, but a lot of people don't.

If both of these films flop, then Warner Bros. may not take anymore chances. It took them over 30 years to try a superhero other than Superman or Batman. Warner Bros. wasn't happy with the 391 million that Superman Returns made and they definetly weren't happy with the 185 million that Watchmen made. What if they are unhappy with the next films.

    2011 - Green Lantern
2012 - Nolan's final Batman film and the Superman reboot

If the Green Lantern film and the Superman reboot are critical and financial faliures, will 2012 be the end of DC comics' big screen, live-action, blockbuster films?

Not likely...they'll probably just stick to Batman. Though I doubt both films will flop..

If both flop, I expect to see DC start to work on turning more of its Vertigo titles into films or TV shows, and stick to the tried-and-true stuff like cartoons for the mainstream DCU.

I can't see both flopping. One maybe. But not both. They're success will largely be dependant on timing of their respective releases. If WB is smart/lucky enough to release them and not have another tent pole film opening the following week, that'll go a long way to helping to rake in the cash. If they open and another major release follows the next week, that'll make things a tougher sell. Of course, if they have excellent word-of-mouth, that'll help to increase their chances of success also.

Green Lantern has Cars 2 coming out the week after. So that's pretty much guaranteed it won't hold on to the number 1 spot, if it gets it.

I can honestly see GL flopping. Unless the next trailer blows everyone away... because the first one was atrocious and everyone who i know who doesn't read comics thinks it's laughable.

Green Lantern may not be a character that can carry a film that audiences would like. It may be to out there with aliens and power rings. Also, Zack Synder rarely has good actors in his films. His Superman pick may be his worst yet. Audiences are still upset that Superman Returns was light on action. This will hurt the reboot similar to how Ang Lee's Hulk hurt the reboot's box office.

Then someone like me, who would love to see a Hawkman film get made one day, is probably screwed. I don't think they'll bomb, though, or at least not both of them. I think Green Lantern looks like it has potential so far, and a Superman film would have to be absolutely horrendous for it to be a genuine flop.

Superman Returns grossed 391 million and they considered it a disappointment. So if Green Lantern and the Superman reboot disappoint will they want sequels and other adaptions?

Honesty, I have no idea how the minds of the suits in Hollywood really work. In my mind, anyway, there's a difference between an outright flop and a "disappointment." Plus, Superman Returns was pretty darn awful, in my opinion, so Snyder would have to royally screw up the formula to outdo that particular number.

And in comparison to Green Lantern: There's not a whole lot to go on right now, of course, but what I do know is I didn't feel good about SR from the very first trailer onward, but I saw it anyway. GL's teaser didn't blow me away, either, but I also didn't find it nearly as underwhelming as I did the initial teaser for SR.

All that being said--and again, as a complete outsider of the industry looking in--I think a "disappointment" would probably lead to WB once again reevaluating their approach, but I don't think it would bring everything to a full-scale halt the way a genuine bomb likely would. Kind of like The Incredible Hulk following Ang Lee's Hulk film, I could see WB going forward with sequels for each film, but changing the tone considerably where necessary.

I think Marvel's proven, even to the thick-headed suits, that if a superhero movie is done right, people will see it.

They'll never stop because The Dark Knight made a billion dollars and every single Spider-man film made over half a billion dollars. They'll never stop trying to duplicate that, every producer thinking, "Well, I won't make the mistake the other guy did. I'll get it right." Newsflash: if the words "Blake Lively, test pilot" cross your lips, you're not getting it right. I don't think Green Lantern will fail, but will be a Superman Returns type of disappointment. And the upside to that is they will instantly put the brakes on the Superman movie because of it. So sorry, GL fans, but I'm selfishly pulling for your boy to fail to stop Synder's Superman.

Just too hokey. A green ring and and a space lantern. A damn lantern. How can anyone not indoctrinated into comics ever accept this premise?

Exactly. That's been the thing going against GL from the start.

I think the kiddies will lap it up, but they are fickle, Cars 2 is released the following week, they'll move onto that.

And I just cannot see adult movie goers who ain't into comics taking Green Lantern seriously. The whole premise of a green magic ring and a corps of space police who have an oath like the boy scouts is just so out there and like you said, hokey.

I think they'll be alright if they're ok movies. Green Lantern is actually better known than most people think and people are fine with power rings and cosmic themes (Captain Planet and Star Wars anyone?)

Don't forget, Avatar had much the same amount of sillyness and it turned out alright.

They just need to make an absolutely fantastic second trailer for GL. Really knock it out of the park because the last one was pretty dreadful.

As for Superman well, we'll see. I actually think they'll do alright. With Snyder you're guaranteed of action and people still like Superman. It all depends on the buzz and with Nolan's name attached, they'll do alright for the general audience.

Most people are fine with power rings? Most children yea... I doubt any adults actually sit down and watch Captain Planet. Honestly, I just think the idea of super powered jewellery is gonna make people laugh.

And GL isn't that well known. His only real exposure to mass audiences was in the JL cartoon, and that was John Stewart.
