Issue 7 INSIDE BACK COVER

Sim: "The Olsen Twins (large image is Mary-Kate, small image is Ashley) would have made great Al Williamson or Stan Drake subjects with their (even in their twenties!) baby-fine blonde hair, huge saucer-like eyes and tiny proportions. A lot of the challenge was trying to capture the hypnotic quality in the eyes -- figuring out what makes it 'tick'. I'd say I got about 75% of it. No idea how it works but it's almost impossible to tear your eyes away, so I'm calling that a partial win."

Issue 4 page 7

Sim: "This is the earliest piece being offered, from the first Swimsuit issue. Although I'm primarily interested in working in single brush and single pen strokes, I do make exceptions on occasion in 'maximum cross-hatching' to imitate photographic tone -- in this case the model's tanned flesh contrasting with her blonde hair and white swimsuit photographed at sunset. I particularly liked the way the lengthening shadows from the rhinestones (on the right bikini triangle) and the shadow meridian (on the left bikini triangle) worked."

Issue 13 page 8

Sim: "This one was a learning -- or, rather, RE-learning -- process. Trying to achieve Stan Drake's inimitable Gillott 290 pen strokes in the hair, I had filled most of a scrap piece of illustration board. Just couldn't get the lines thin enough or the curves smooth enough or consistent enough. Finally, after about a half an hour, I realized the ink was too thick. I poured in a mixture of half-ink, half distilled water. Quite a bit actually. And finally the ink was thin enough to do fine curled hair. Which made all the finicky little details easier to do, as well. It's a poor workman who blames his tools, but SOMETIMES the tools ARE at fault!"

Issue 14 page 22

"This is about the closest I've come to actually getting one of the Al Williamson-looking models to look as if she was inked by Al Williamson. SpamHe didn't use a lot of lines to achieve his effects. SpamAdhering strictly to Alex Raymond's tropes on RIP KIRBY (which Williamson learned working as an assistant to John Prentice, Raymond's successor on RIP KIRBY). SpamThe cross-hatching on the jeans is very UN-Williamson but everything else is pretty austere. SpamThe Cerebus expression is more about the pen lines that the model. SpamAlthough she is a VERY pretty model."

Issue 16 front cover

"I'm actually developing my own style as I go along -- not quite Al Williamson or Stan Drake or Neal Adams or Alex Raymond but -- sometimes -- a synthesis of all four. SpamThose bidders who got the limited edition 'glamourpuss art auction print' in the mail are looking at Dave Sim's ideal ink density. SpamNot too thick. SpamNot too thin, so it gives a nice solid black but is also capable of fine-line rendering and cross-hatching."

-------------------------------------------------

Issue 16 page 22

"Russ heath, who did the covers for glamourpuss 11, 12 and 13, sent me four more pieces 'on spec' -- on glamourpuss with eyes crossed and tongue sticking out and three just from fashion photos. SpamWhich made me decide to incorporate a new feature into the book -- 'THAT RUSS HEATH GIRL' -- of which this is number one. SpamBidders who got the limited edition 'glamourpuss art auction print' in the mail will notice that it was misspelled as 'THAT RUSS HEAT GIRL' which I suspect was a Freudian slip on the part of Sherwood Copy who did the prints. SpamSSSS! YOW!"
