yes, in shape it resembles the Star of David. however, in context it is very clearly the classic Dracula amulet.

I read in a Mignola interview that Hellboy in Hell will probably be out in august.
For any origin to the "Dracula pendant" all I managed to come across, would be a jewelled head-attire worn by Vlad III "Tepes" / "The Impaler", in what would be a mid-16th century copy of an early contemporary painting of this Wallachian*voivode* or ruler dude:
a painting becoming part of the 'Cabinet of Curiosities' of the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand II, also as of the 16th century, perhaps not only since Vlad would have been curious for his much fabled excessively bloody if not sadistic fearmongering tyrantyness, but likely also due to the quaintly protruding lower jaw as depicted - (the portrait fits a collection on numerous remarkably if not dis-figured persons, as paintings hanging side-by-side. Like a freakshow or carnival on canvas.) - with this type of jaw protrusion being or becoming known as a "Habsburg lip" - due to the condition appearing rampant in the Habsburger monarchic lineage, which the art collector Ferdi would himself be part of.
If so, for or either despite any of his chinnyness, Ferdi might have been capable of self-deprecation? No *small* feat, especially for a monarch...
The gold star impaled onto Vlad's hat seems to resemble the general shape or silhouette of the "Dracula pendant" quite closely it appears! To which I could find no further particulars or origins.
And also: might this jaw protrusion or weird teeth alignment in specifically this Vlad-painting have played a part to the iconic wolflike fangs with which Dracula or vampires would get to be associated with, centuries later?
Chillingly good stuff besides Mignola, Slint, M, Knut and really big chunks of tinfoil?Been called a 'good egg'. Been told to rock, been told to steady myself. Been told to (please) be goin' places.

Yes!!! Mignola-drawn Daryl!!
And after this... the Scorched Earth trilogy!!
Is that the final cover? Looks pretty good.
Hope the spine is green though. It better be!

Yep.
It's really cool to see how this would seem a second take on the 'Killing Ground' tpb cover, like 4 years later. Seeming similar yet different and new at the same time.
I like how these B.P.R.D.-HC covers seem to iconically be centering prime agents cover-wise?
Who'll be next, Liz? Johann? Kate?

My money is on Johann. It's revolving around prime agents, but no females have yet appeared (well, there's really only Liz and Kate). We've had Abe, then Roger, now Ben, so I think Johann seems to be the next logical choice. It's possible Liz and Kate appear on the HCs after Plague of Frogs (I'm sure they were mentioned?)
You're right though. I had to actually look for the differences (the shading on Ben's arm gives it away on closer inspection), which is pretty funky.

I'm definitely rooting for Liz. Or Kate. Maybe it should be Kate, 'cuz I'd be so stubbornly Liz-minded - that would show me!
Although narrative will be a factor weighing in, I suppose.
I find it striking how both covers seem to work in such different ways, yet with supposing seemingly such little difference!
I can like 'em both, for each one I happen to look at for a bit, I'll be thinking: this is clearly the better one...
I think I like second version Daryl best, looking cleaner or more focused, although the first version seems nicely feverishly bouncy and a li'l more disturbingly teethy.
I like seeing all of the Were-Jaguar, complete with spots, but then on the HC the word 'Plague' seems to become sort of his eyeball, miraculously.
But the red bit of negative space or lighting on the centre-left accentuating the blood-drool I like in the latest version much better.
Also due to the lighting on Ben's side makes things nice and poppy.
And the BPRD-letters in the TPB-cover, are they supposed to be as like on a poster or sign within the image or something? They seem crooked a wee bit, but maybe that would have solely or specifically been done so I would now be liking the HC cover just that smidgeon of a dash better?![]()

I'd wager the 4th HC would have Liz, as she's central to the final storylines.
Johann could be vol. 1 of the Hell on Earth HCs.
Yeah, the character on the front of these covers is always central to the major arcs of the story. Abe dominated the first Plague of Frogs volume (especially in the last story), volume 2 was clearly about Roger, and volume 3 really digs deep into Daimio's story, so I'm thinking Liz will be on the cover for volume 4.
As for the Hell on Earth volumes, they're a long way off. We don't even know how many trades each omnibus will contain. But yeah, I think Johann's a prime candidate for the cover.
Ah, fair enough - I've only got the omnibus editions so I was guessing more than anything.
Still waiting for Exorcism. We won't get a preview until around May, will we? :(
Amazon is selling the Animated Abe Sapien Statue for $20 right now. Just thought I'd pass it along.
