Fantastic article, and a great idea. Would've loved to see Bert sitting in a director's chair at Gleason's with Brian Kenny analyzing the fight.
War Cotto!!
oh f*ck me - these have been recolored haven't they??
I never got the sense that Supes was a particularly skilled or technical fighter, so yeah, under a red sun, I could easily see Ali kicking his butt.
Supes and Ali trained beforehand in his Fortress with a "chunk" of red sun nearby so he wouldn't have his powers. Hey, Supes has had to fight other Kryptonians, so he must have known something about hand-to-hand.
Too bad the previews here didn't show the following page, where Ali walked away rather than finish Superman off, allowing him to collapse at the bell.
And George Reeves knocked out bad guys plenty of times. We all know the reason we ducked when the crooks threw their empty gun at him is that the bullets were just special effects, but the prop gun was heavy as a real gun.
A) I love those old treasury sized editions.
B) I'm thinking every thing from the 70's is going to need to be re-colored, not just Neal Adams' stuff.
C) I hope DC re-issues some of those Treasury editions. My hopes are:
DC Treasury Edition #36: The Bible - Great Joe Kubert Art.
DC Treasury Edition #54: Superman vs Wonder Woman
DC Treasury Edition #55: Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes
DC Treasury Edition #58: Superman vs Shazam
as well as:
Superman vs The Amazing Spiderman
I'll definitely take a re-issue of the Superman vs Wonder Woman one.
That's one book I've never been able to find. The rest I thankfully own.
Wow. Another cheap cash in. Oh, I'm sorry. Was my cynicism showing?
DC goes back and forth about whether he should/does actually have fighting prowess. Personally, I prefer Clark to be a little more than a super nice guy with powers. When writers start making him excel at everything (and give him some kind of BS Kryptonian karate), I kind of lose interest.
