Default Big Time and the fresh start -- the new sales results and predictions mega-thread

This conversation actually got started in another thread, but it seemed like it might warrant it's own -- how do people think sales will do after the start of Big Time? Personally, I really think Big Time feels like a fresh start and a great jumping on point, with the book and character not burdened with the baggage of OMD, BND, and OMIT -- and I think sales will be stronger as a result.

Am I way off-base with my thinking?

Nah. I think consistency alone will account for a big jump, and Slott's been seen as the heir apparent since BND began.

I don't see how it won't have any baggage from OMD or OMIT.

Maybe it's just me, but even knowing there will be new status quos in place as a result of those arcs, it just doesn't feel like this new start is burdened with those. For me, Big Time really feels like the fresh start I think Marvel was shooting for with BND.

I just wish OMIT had happened sooner.... the wave they had going was amazing... and I feel OMIT stole its thunder. Big Time has potential to bring that back.

i see some non traditional asm readers...getting onboard for this one...and they find it as a new start

the net hype and the spider-man saga really helped.

it would be interesting to check out the sales of Big Time

Well, I said in the other thread I think it'll be the number one book for the month. Maybe it's a bit of a stretch, but I think it has that kind of potential.

Your not way off. Big Time will get more readers. The question is can Big Time keep those new readers? I have no idea what the answer is.
Doc Ock - I'm Peter Parker.
Peter Parker - Not anymore Spider-Man. From now on I'm Peter Parker.

    Good post Ryan. - Oldschool

I cannot recommend Scarlet Spider enough, but here's trying.

I think it feels like a fresh start as well. Have we ever had the status quo of Peter Parker being totally successful in his personal and professional life? I am looking forward to it, as it's something I've always thought would be interesting to see explored. Also, hopefully we'll get consistent art teams. The ones they have lined up are great. And it looks like Slott is bringing back tons of major villains. I don't want to speculate about sales, but I'll definitely be buying every issue.

As long as someone keeps Quesada far away from the book, the plot, and from writing any issues it will do well. Unfortunately, you know he is going to screw over Slott by deciding well into next year that he wants to butt in with his "final story" about Peter and MJ and that is going to tick readers off all over again. Just watch.

I don't feel like this is quite the "fresh start" others do so much as a continuation from the past few years but I do think it will sell a bit better (though not tons better ----beyond # 648, that is).

Slott was arguably the lynchpin of the WebHeads writing staff over the past 3 years so there is not a big difference there plus the Status Quo is not changing greatly (that we know of right now) beyond Peter's job.

On the other hand, a committment to only 2 books per month (vs 3) and a steady creative voice should prove more attractive.

I expect a bit of a tick up on overall sales.

Most books don't keep all the buyers of the first issue of a new direction. I'd say the question is where the book's going to level out with Slott as the solo writer.

It'll still have some baggage, but it's still more removed from those storylines. And there will be less of a need to reference that material, in the same way that JMS didn't mention the Clone Saga very often.

I think this is a very important distinction to keep in mind. One would hope that we are done with references to OMD and OMIT and that the book can move foward in a more sure-footed fashion with Peter as a bachelor. The further the book can move away from those events (please, Joe Q: no Part 3 to your "saga:---I'm beggin' you!) the better.
