Be still my heart! <3<3 I was most excited when I saw she and her luscious twin on the cover of that issue of Secret Warriors, but alas, was let down when they didn't make their grand return. Of all the twins who partake of twincest in the Marvel U., these two did it with great style and panache. And more often than not, looked great while doing it.

Mine too. And that's including the Tranny he slept with in his own series. It's a shame Marvel's writers didn't know what to do with these two. They need to come back and remake a whole new Upstarts with them playing the role the Gamesmaster did and dole out assignments for the characters.

The Upstarts were pretty much useless and neutered.
The whole "killing mutants for points" was nonsensical. What was the prize again? Why did these particular characters come together?

Since you had a couple of "legacy" characters in there they should have gone with a "better version" theme. Have Shinobi improve upon schemes his father tried and failed at. Same with Struckers. Cortez could have been pulling Magneto schemes out of the dustbin and making them better.

    The prize was immortality.

And they did. Shinobi was still involved with business dealings, and was trying to pull the Hellfire Club back together. Cortez brought about a bigger, and more interesting group of Acolytes and lead them until that borewhore Exodus came and stole the show. The Struckers weren't as fortunate, as the writers really didn't know what to do with these characters. But the one who profited the most of his time with the Upstarts was Graydon Creed.

And GTFO with your negative nancy yet ill informed on these characters self. It's an Appreciation thread, not I don't know what I'm talking about so I'm gonna go blow smoke out my ass thread.

It was a team who killed mutants for sport. The points were scored on how creative their tactics and strategies were in doing so. Genocide was just a game to them.

Why do these characters need a prize? Why do these characters need a purpose outside of their shared thrill of killing?

That is what made them so interesting. There was no rhyme or reason to their actions, sometimes the scariest villians are the villians who don't care one way or another.

And I thought that, additionally, the winner won control over the other members and their assets, thus leaving the losers destitute subservients. That's the only way to hit the Upstarts in a way that mattered to them: in the pocketbook.

Yeah, that was the point. They'd all lose their trust funds and have to work for a living if they lost. Which for them would be tantamount to a death sentence.
