And would it be an occult type book?
And would it be an occult type book?
With Dr. Strange on the New Avengers and that team sort of dealing with mystical things, I'm not sure a Defenders book is needed to be honest.
I think the time isn't right at the moment. I mean, dr strange, Valkyrie, hulk are not really suited to being put together again are they? The old team was cool in its time.
I don't care what you guys say. I do not want to read about Jim Belushi and Jerry O'Connell fighting off mystical threats in some superhero courtroom on a monthly basis. No matter if the Silver Surfer is involved or not. Bad idea.
I'd buy it easily.
New Avengers, Morbius The Living Vampire, Scarlet Spider, Iron Man, Fearless Defenders, Fantastic Four, Deadpool Killogy, Savage Wolverine, Wolverine, Uncanny X-Men & X-Force, Cable & X-Force, Gambit
Judging by the last couple attempts, just based purely on the name alone, no.
The Punisher: I’m going to cauterize your rectum, sealing it shut, so when you turn those delicious Pink Pants™ Fruit Pies into waste products the bilirubin in your feces will leach into your bloodstream and you’ll die screaming! And I’ll watch while having sex with this grateful prostitute!
Trussed-Up Hooker: Blueberry are my favorite!
In other words, what StoneGold said.

DO IT!
It might work as a mini series, but it would never last as an ongoing.
On the name-recognition alone? No.
But I'm sure there are potential pitches, potential handlings that would make a very worthwhile Defenders book just floating out there to be enacted someday. The book always survived or fell short on the shoulders of its creative staff of the moment, though, not name-recognition or character-identification; there isn't even a central concept that really holds through every incarnation even of the ongoing book back in the day. That said, if you put toddler-brained Hulk and Hellcat in the same title, I will buy it every month.
I don't think the Defenders concept works, period. We have some nostalgia for the great Englehart and Steve Gerber runs, but most of the original run of the book kind of sucked. It was far more Tappin' Tommy than it was great concepts and stellar execution.
Defenders was lightning in a bottle, and the utter failure of all attempts to recreate the original Defenders (whether the Secret Defenders, Last Defenders, the Order, etc.) is proof of this.
Hindsight lad
Hulk and Silver Surfer are multi-media cashcows (Hulk especially)so it could work fine as long as it IS NOT OCCULT BASED.
Comic fans now tend to hate the occult. So you could use Doc, Hulk, SS and Submariner but it would have to be some thing more Sci Fi based.
Hulk and the Surfer do this kind of thing (Sci-Fi) all the time. Doc and Subby have done it enought so that its plausible. Its not a big leap for these characters.
If Marvel had say the Annihilation wave coming to Earth and Silver Surfer getting the gang back together to defend against it, that kind of thing.
Basically place them in widescreen space battle type situations.
yes it would work... they just need to take it seriously this time.
it worked in defenders vol. 1 issues 1-152...the last two times have been giffen's "bwa-ha-ha" and before that it was larsen and busiek doing a somewhat comedic take on them. for obvious reasons, i won't mention secret defenders *oops*
the point is, it did work for a long, lengthy run. the four core defenders are popular characters in their own right, combine them with a solid writer/artist team, and I would definitely say it would work.
