I can't say I care for the changes made to the character of John Carter when there wasn't anything wrong with the way the character was originally written.
I didn't really see any outright changes in the preview. What I did see was what seems to be typical Dynamite padding/decompression of the origin story so that it's going to take a whole issue before he gets to Mars. It's what kept me from getting the Lone Ranger. Tired of modern comics taking a couple of issues to get the character in costume and in gear. It really should only take about 2-3 pages to introduce us to Carter and get him ON Mars. Rest of the character development can be done while on Mars via flashbacks, internal dialogue running through action scenes, etc. A lot can be done in fleshing out Carter's life on Earth, but at no point should that be the focus. The important thing is to get him onto Mars and into action as quick as possible.
I haven't read the original novels, so hopefully it'll be an interesting experience for me regardless (at least I don't have to be annoyed by any bad changes they might make :P).
So yeah, I'll be picking the first issue up.
Actually, as Dynamite has already stated, the true adaptation of "A Princess of Mars" doesn't start until issue #3. The first two issues are introduction, split between Carter on earth and the inhabitants of Mars prior to Carter's arrival. I anticipate Carter in the cave to be the cliffhanger for issue #2.
