Bendis is a very very very good comic writer. Daredevil, Ultimate Spidey, Powers, Jinx, Alias, & the Ultimate Enemy trilogy he's writing prove that to me.

A regular "classic" Avengers title does seem out of his element. Though New Avengers = Championship as far as I'm concerned.'

I would actually love to see Joe Casey get a crack at the regular Avengers title.
Loving Marvel NOW! right now! Amazing books. Down to just Batman, Batman & Robin, Justice League, JL Dark, Aquaman, Green Lantern, and Green Arrow for DC. New 52 sucks.

I have heard he is a great writer, but I have yet to see any proof of it myself. I have to go based on what I have read.

Joe Casey on the other hand has proved that he loves the Avengers and I think he could do a great job. I'd love to see him on the book.

Given that you haven't read any of his other work you're allowed that bias. While I don't hate his Avengers work like others I do think it's definately think it's the weakest of his work. It doesn't have the same amazing characterzation that DD, Ultimate Spidey or Powers has. And I haven't really cared at all about this time travel story at all.

No matter to me what he did with Avengers Disassembled, I though Bendis showed real promise the first few arcs of New Avengers. Everything just seemd to come apart a bit after Civil War. As much as I like most of Millar's other work I reall thought Civil War disrupted alot of books & storylines when it happened. Whatever though.

I just really like Joe Casey's work in general. Not only Avengers, but if Fraction ever left Iron Man, I would love him to take over there as well.

I read quite a bit of Busiek's run. He also had Avengers Forever and the Thunderbolts to boot. It was a great run.

Default Number One Avengers Writer Is STILL Roy Thomas!

Stern was and is outstanding! Busiek was phenomenal! Englehart was passable. Slott comes closest today with capturing the 'sense' of Avenger. But for the sheer magnitude and for practically defining what it is to be an Avenger--Roy Thomas is the supreme Avengers writer of them all. Just look at the Kree-Skrull War; the writing in those 10 issues far exceeds anything put out today. Granted, some of the dialogue has a definite Silver Age bent to it, but I'll take that over the pseudo-hip jargon thrown around as 'cool' today. At least Roy gave each character their own distinctive 'voice;' that is something that is missing in recent years. ROY THOMAS IS THE AVENGERS WRITER EXTRAORDINAIRE!

To me John Byrne is my favorite. Always has been. The whole Vision story, Wanda's powers being defined and laying seeds for Disassembled, Wonderman revealing his secret feelings for her. Hawkeye at the time still too hot tempered to lead the team so that later portrayals could show he was just as capable to lead as Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, or Luke Cage.

At the moment, my favourite is Christos Gage.

    Roger Stern. Classic Avengers.

Hm, shouldn't Joe Casey be among the others in the poll?
Michelangelo > Leonardo da Vinci > Isaac Newton > Nikola Tesla > Valeria Richards > Reed Richards = T'Challa > Victor Von Doom > Hank Pym > Bruce Banner > Hank McCoy > Tony Stark

John Byrne ruined the Vision imho. The only version I've liked since isn't even the Vision (and doesn't pretend to be) in Young Avengers

Roger Stern, easily. With one reservation, I really disliked some of the teams he put together. Namor and Hercules on the team at the same time? Two half naked guys with very similar powers and attitudes, seemed very redundant.
Starfox? She-Hulk? Captain Marvel? Doctor Druid? I feel very blah about all of these characters except for Namor.

It says a lot for his writing that he is still my favorite even through some of those teams where I disliked half of more of them at any one time.

    Followed by Shooter and Stan.

Englehart and Thomas did some great stuff, but I always felt their quality was all over the place.

Busiek gets an honorable mention, but he never shook up the book or took the kind of creative risks that some of the others did. He played it safe, but did write some really fun stuff.

In fact, I'm noticing most of my favorite writers really shook up the team and did some unconventional things. Even Bendis, my least favorite writer on the book ever stands out for shaking things up.

Not to pick on Kurt, because I am a big fan (especially of Astro City) but he really didn't take enough risks on this book, that is why I won't rank him any higher.

I love some of these guys (and hate some of them too) but Jeff Parker is my favorite Avengers writer in recent memory.
New and improved me. Now with a CAPITAL “B”.

Roy Thomas, followed by Kurt Busiek.

After that Stan Lee, Roger Stern, and Steve Englehart would be a sort of best of the rest for me.
