Default World of Darkness MMO revealed!

    http://www.massively.com/2010/09/24/...he-masquerade/

    OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!

This is the one game i've been dreaming of ever since the original vampire game!
Ieven wrote part of a design doc to maybe make it happen some day.
But I never expected them to go for it and the most beautifull thing is: it's based on the old WOD setting!!

    Oh Em Gee!

    OMG
    OMG
    OMG!

I heard rumors about this and i asked on this board a few months ago in the Vampire: Bloodlines thread, and I was under the impression it wasn't likely going to work out. But seeing this... YAY!!!!

I loved playing as a Tremere and Venture, especially using Dominate in dialogues. Malkavians were super fun as well.
    Can't wait!!!

I may have read that wrong, but they did Eve Online.
Eve Online is the single most boring experience i have ever had in my entire life.
And i don't mean in games, i mean books, film, classes, jobs, i had more fun in all of them then i had in Eve Online.

If it's Vampire only I'm honestly rather 'meh' about it. Call me if they're planning on doing anything with the Wraith or Mage gamelines.

Just like the WOD mushes of the days of lore (early to late 90's) this MMO will be filled with lots of fat guys pretending to be hot women seeking to roleplay sex witth other fat dudes pretending to be hot women.

Well, it's a subscription based mmo that isn't called world of warcraft, so i wouldn't say lots of fat dudes.

they could really corner "the lonely woman in a true blood t-shirt" market with this game.

I dunno though, the lonely woman in true blood shirt is more the wii demographic.

When CCP bought out White Wolf in 2007, everybody understood that they were planning to roll out a World of Darknes MMORPG. The original plan was to release it in 2011, but it's normal for these things to run about a year behind schedule. Or at least that's what one of the City of Heroes developers told a friend of mine who is freelance game designer currently working on Savage Worlds.

2012 is a long time off, and meanwhile, the wheels are falling off at White Wolf. They scaled down their pipeline to a bare minimum of role-playing releases for 2010. They just shut down the Vampire CCG two weeks ago, which has been around almost as long as Magic, steadily selling 2-3 expansions per year for the last 12 years. Recent expansions were even selling out the first print run and getting re-printed. And White Wolf gave up on boardgames last year, despite the surge in popularity in boardgames in the last ten years.

Four years ago, two separate groups of friends tried to recruit me into their favorite MMORPGs. My old friends in Indy had a World of Warcraft guild, and my local friends were seriously into Eve. The Warcraft friends were so tightly organized and active that it looked like an unpaid part-time job to me, so I said no. The Eve friends were a little less obsessive, but the game looked like a cross between Firefly and eBay. I told them that, and they all laughed and admitted that it kind of was. Since I already have an accounting job, I didn't feel like playing Eve.

I sort of fear a World of Darkness MMORPG. If it's anything like the Vampire: Bloodlines PC game from a few years back, I might get addicted and lose large blocks of free time to the game. On the other hand, I played in Vampire LARPs for a few years, so it could be that the kewlness is drowned out by tedious vampire politics. I'm not opposed to political games, I enjoyed Model United Nations when I was in high school. But vampire politics are boring, always coming down to the same-old Who Shall Be Prince question.

It's interesting that this is going to be based on Vampire: the Masquerade (old World of Darkness), and not Vampire: the Requiem (new World of Darkness). While I thought that the new World of Darkness was a definite improvement, all the other local Vampire players disagree, because they are twinked out power gamers who want to abuse Thaumaturgy, Viccissitude and Obtenebration. Probably smart of CCP to go with the old World, there are a lot more fans and a lot more material. On the downside, there is too much published information about the old World, so it lacks the mystery and intrigue of the new World.

As for Twilight fans, no, this is not their game.

It makes sense from a design point of view too.

Old WoD is essentially superheroes or high fantasy with a gothic skin. I guess that sort of thing lends itself better to a MMORPG than the new setting.

Twilight? HAHAHA!!! do you know anything about WoD? I am hoping for perma death open pvp, the kids and casuals will disappear so fast. WoD and the entire universe white wolf has build over the last 20 years or so is so deep, dark, and deadly. Yes people will be drawn to it at first because it's vamps, but after they level a bit and then get murdered and have to reroll... they'll be gone.

Without permadeath, it's going to become as tedious as a LARP that keeps letting the same losers back in the game playing near-clones of their previous characters. The problem with permadeath from an MMORPG standpoint is the potential loss of customers and revenue.

    Perma death? For vampires?

And that's not getting into how asinine it is from a gameplay perspective in general.
