Question When did Wizard Magazine begin to suck?

I used to read wizard almost monthly from around 1991 to 1995. Back then, the captions were witty, the columns were plentiful and well written and the coverage was vast and varied.

They covered everything from movies to comic trading cards.

Last year's Wizard World offered a year subscription with the purchase of a three day pass. I took a dive at the offer but was extremely disappointed when my first issue arrived.

It had far fewer pages, by an order of magnitude. The coverage was limited. And the wit that I remember was long gone. What happened to 'the guide to comics'?

I figured we could bypass a lot of conversation that we've already had several dozen times that way.

Yep. We've had at least one thread with this exact title not that long ago. I used to read Wizard regularly back when I didn't know any better. It had some funny bits, but as a source of useful or interesting information and articles about comics it was never a very good magazine.

I'm kind of surprised the magazine's still around, given the collapsing of the magazine market and the company's increasing focus on the, apparently failing from what I've heard, Wizard World Conventions.

Since that Newsarama, CBR and Wikipedia have better information and coverage on comics than Wizard.

I think with Wizard it began to die once the Internet emerged and they really had no way to battle it. News wise , the internet moves at a speed Wizard can't compete with. So they basically were behind and to survive started to get cushy with Marvel and DC.

So they'd get the previews to the big events and books that were coming out. Then they cut pages and decided to become a Men's magazine as they proclaim.

Also they have had a huge....HUGE turnover in terms of talent writing and working on the book. They can't afford the salaries so they'd go to cheaper lesser talent.

I did hear a report that its basically a skeleton crew keeping Wizard magazine around . The book is being put out by a few people due to the layoffs and those not wanting paid beans now.

I don't know. I do know that when I was a teenager, Wizard was cool because it directed me toward stuff like Transmetropolitan and Desperadoes.
