I've been working on my own superhero tale though more in the form of a novel than a comic though l draw as well or used to. Since strength is his primary power he compares to Superman in that sence though considerbaly less powerfull since he is in a world mostly without such powers. Those that do exist are not known by the public. Superheros are known from comics and movies as in our world. lt's possible his core abilities will derive from an extraterresrial source or else an extrademensional one. Even time travel from the future is a possibility. l'm still udecided.
The origin story's plot setting and characters are all fairly well set though plot details may change. Basicly, the hero, Ben Cord [Benjamn Matthias Cord jr.] was born in 1954 while his father was in the army stationed in Georgia. His grandfather was a career military man too. ln 1965 the family relocated to a base in Washington state and the father went to Vietnam whereas the grandfather retired. Unknown to Ben his grandmother had inherited a genetic mutation involving a healing factor, disease resistance and reduced aging. She passed it on to Ben Sr. and in purer form to Ben himself. He was taught to try to hide it.
This heritage is what mght be ultimately extraterresrial, extrademensional or induced be time travelers from an indefinite future. The grandmother left because he reduced ageing was becoming noticible.
Ben Sr. was wounded in 1968 but survived when he shouldn't have. He was taken into a secret project for human enhancement that began in the 1950's, inspired by Nazi scientists brought to the US and in Cold War competition with Russia and China. The fate of Ben Sr. is not revealed in the origin story beyond that. The family was told he was dead. But his younger brother never quite believed the official story and dug for years to find ot the truth. [he was a journalist and the family black sheep for not going into the army.]
Ben jr. was encouraged by is grandfather to enter the army and recruited by those who hoped he shared his father's mutation. He joined in 1972. When uncle got too close to the truth he was killed in 1979. But he'd sen what he found out to Ben's mother and grandfather. They believed the evidence and warned Ben to go awol and run. lt shattered his grandfather. Ben was skeptical but the secret organization engineered his kidnapping.
His death was officially claimed to have occurred in a helicopter accident during a training for a mission. ln reality he was taken to a hidden underground base between Mt St. Helens and Mt. Ranier. There he was experimented upon to try to reproduce hs healing factor and increase his already great strength. They also seek to brainwash him into a complient operative. The physical enhancement [method uncertain so far] succeeds. The mind control is faught by the ethics he learned growing up. He could be ruthless but refused to be a robot with no conscience. He tried to escape and almost did before being gassed and returned to the base.
By the late 70's the secret organization proved unsuccessfull at creating supersoldiers. Some were strong but not controlable. Many had become monsterlike mutates. After his failed escape attempt Ben was put in stasis. The project gradually defunded and moved to a less expensive less isolated facility in northern California. Before the move was completed Mt. St. Helens erupted and the base was abandonned suddenly. Ben was amongst the 'specimens left behind. The head of the project that enhanced his strength funneled all the bases emergnecy power to the capsules in the same room as Bens. Some of that power was solar.
A colleague of the scientist who headed Ben's project was a genticist focused upon cloning. He secretly took tissue samples from Ben and later created a clone of Ben which a female assistant carried to term though she died giving birth. His theory was that if properly trained to ignore ethics the clone would have all Ben's physical advantages but not be hindered by Cord's morals. The organization had not been willing to wait 20 years for results. Ben's healing factor canceled out the problems clones face from deriving from an adult's cells.
James Worthington was obscessed by his experiment with Ben. At the new facility in California spoke too much about it to a coworker named Dirkfeld. Worthington and his assistant, Gabriel Prentiss tried to go back to the base to retrieve Ben. But their 'employers' pursued them. They crashed and Prentiss was killed. Worthington was found and brought to the nearby small town of Emerson where he recovered. He claimed to be Prentiss and got involved with the daughter of the town's doctor, whoes partner he became. The Genticist, Walter Ratlinger, tracked his former colleague down in Emerson. He agreed to validate the Prentiss identity declaring Worthington dead as long as James kept his mouth shut.
Dirkfeld was questioned about what Worthington told him. The harassment destroyed his career and broke up his marriage. This lead Dirkfeld's son Gerard to hate the government. He was obscessed with the hidden base and vowed to find it. He grew up good with computers along with some crazy ideas he promulgated via the lnternet. He gained a following among the angry and disaffected and set up a compound for some of them on a former farm outside Emerson. They secretly searched for the hidden base whilst bullying the townsfolk.
The clone grew up as the foster son of Ratlinger who'd faked a marriage certificate betweeb Ben and his former female assistant. Legally, the clone was Ben's son, born posthumously. Educated to view morals as weak the clone became a secret operative of great skill and ruthlessness. When he learned he was a clone it unhinged him.
ln the present hikers come upon a service shaft into the base having sighted one of the solar power panels. They go down to explore and get lost. They find a control room and try to turn on the power only to accidently cut the power sustaining Ben's capsule and those near it. An alarm goes off and an automated lockdown begins. Ben escapes his capsule but so does one of the more bestial mutants. The hikers make it to the service shaft except one. She gets trapped saving her younger brother. She is the younger partner to the town doctor.Reluctantly the oters agree to go for help. She is attacked by the mutant but saved by Ben, who is amnesiac.
One the hikers heads off on his own not wanting to admit having gone into the base even though that condemned
his freind's older sister to remain trapped . He uses his strength to help them escape. They are picked up driven ito town after they reached the nearest road. The lone hiker was captured by Dirkfeld's men. He proves unable to find the service shaft a second time yet Dirkfeld learns who his companions were.
ln town Prentiss was shocked to see Ben but tries to hide it. Ben began to settle into the town with the help of Kristina Morgan the young doctor he rescued. A potential romance developes. Ben becomes a local hero by stopping some of Dirkfeld's men from bullying locals at the town diner and afterwards when they tried to grab Kristina to take to Dirkfeld's compound. His unique abilities make the Sherif suspicious. He insists on checking Ben's identity.
Doing so gains Ratlinger's attention in as he'd long ago flagged Ben's records in case anyone dug into them. Ratlinger hopes to recruit Ben and to create more clones since he's proud of how the first one turned out. The clone who hates the idea of being Ben's copy or of any more being made. He kills hiS stepfather and made it look like an accident, planning to go to Emerson to kill Ben.
Dirkfeld decides to kidnap Kristina's brother and his girlfreind on their way back to college in Seattle. They will lead him to the base or serve as hostages . An FBI agent suspects Ratlinger's death was not accidental but cannot prove it. He follows the clone to Emerson. There the clone blackmails 'Prentiss' into tellng him where Ben was.Ratlinger told him of Worthington and their pact. The doctor's life is saved by the arrival his nurse but she is not so lucky. The clone is now wanted by the police. Ben and Kristina rescued her brother from Dirkfeld. Prentiss revealed where Ben and Kristina went and that the clone was after them.
The fight between Ben and the clone occurs on TEITON dam [about 30 miles west of Yakima]. The clone gains an advantage from a belt that creates a sort of forcefield, probable alien tech stored in the hidden base and given him by Dirkfeld. Dirkfeld had found the base soon after Ben rescued Kevin and Diane. Dirkfeld's men had been decimated. He wanted revenge.Ben equalized the fight getting the belt away from the clone. The clone escaped. When the base was retaken by the government Dirkfeld sacrificed his men to get away with as much of the 'alien tech' as he could.
Knowing the clone or would come back for vengeance Ben worried for Kristina. The government agreed to protect her and give Ben a new identity if he would work for them. He accepted.Ben
knew he'd need help to adapt.
This is great stuff, very well thought out. I'd love to read more.
