not really. It would more allow you to follow along with current stories. To discover all there is to know about spider-man you have much reading to do.

Check out the Marvel Masterworks trades or the Essential trades (those are in black and white). Id also recommend reading spider-mans bio on marvel.com or wikipedia.org

You already have the general concept from the movies and games... the details are somewhat different depending on what game you mean. (the movie has differences)

With that said, I would grab, before all else, Ultimate Spider-Man from issue #1. It's not set in the regular MU, and all its continuity is self-contained. Bendis's run on this book has not only been my favorite run in any comic, but, to me, Ultimate Spider-Man is the definitive take on the character. If you start collecting the floppies now, you'll be starting in a new era (thanks to The Death of Spider-Man storyline). But without a doubt, get issues #1-#160.

I'll throw +1 on that... I've been a fan of Spider-Man cartoons for years and just recently got into comics. Started with USM and love it, because it's not nearly as daunting as the ASM backlog.
Also, it's got a nice, modern feel to it.

With that said, I am planning to pick up ASM starting at #648 very soon... what can I say? I'm addicted. ;)

You won't be dissapointed! I loved pretty much the whole of big time, it's nice to see Peter Parker get a break, and it's a great jump on point for new fans! :D

Hey guys just signed up here and have recently started reading ASM from the start and am currently on #19.

I want to read up to #100 (or more depending on your recommendations, I really want to get into the origin and first years of Spidey) and then read the original Venom sagas.

After that, where should I pick up? I heard people mentioning starting at 600. Is that the "Brand New Day" i hear about? I also want to read the Ultimate series as well.

I really am a newbie with all of this so anything you guys can do to point me in the right direction is a big help. Thanks!

The Ultimate books are pretty damn good, and rather accessible.

The first Ultimate collection volume may be the best place to start.

Brand New Day refers to a 101 issue stretch of Amazing Spider-Man. It ended a few months ago, as the Big Time era began.

So you might want to start reading at the point the Big Time began: Amazing Spider-Man #648.

There will also be a jump-on point this Wednesday with Amazing Spider-Man #666.
    Sincerely,

Should I abandon the Stan Lee written originals altogether? Like I said I just finished #19 where Betty just started dating Ned Leeds. I see Lee wrote the first 100 and I figured I would read those and then jump into Ultimates as well as the newer ones being released now.

It depends on whether you enjoy it. Stan Lee's run is referenced often, but if you don't enjoy it, you'll probably get by without reading any of it.

I'm enjoying the character direction in the early ones, and I am also able to spot which ones are skippable i.e. The Clown and his Masters of Menace issue.

I'm definitely thinking about picking up the new one that comes out Wednesday and picking up from there as well.

Also, I can't help but imagine that the Ultimate comics as well as more current ones are more darker than the Lee written ones? I'm a fan of darker comics...thoroughly enjoyed the Arkham Asylum graphic novel. Spider Man have any that are similar in the way of a graphic novel?
