I wouldn't recommend Maximum Carnage, but some people do like it.

The best stories in Spider-Man: Legends Vol. 1-3 are included in the Birth of Venom TPB.
I thought the three legends volumes would be cheaper than the Todd McFarlane Omnibus so by what you are saying all i need is to buy Birth of Venom? well thats saved a bit of money :)

    Thanks for replying

I had another quick question. Are there any other spiderman titles that I could jump into besides amazing spider man and where would those jump points be. Thanks.

Hi, Just wondering if anyone could give me a little guidance?
I used to read spider-man comics from an early age and started with the British publication of exploits ( I think) which included the maximum carnage saga. That ended and i then read the other British comic "Astonishing spider-man" from the first issue through to about the time when the scarlet spider came into it. I am finding it hard to find a continuation to the story and if "astonishing" finished, what was the next set to read? I was hoping they would be in hard back to avoid me buying the comics individually?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Mouldyad.

would the british version be a reprint of the american version? If so pick up the Complete Clone Saga trades (volume 1-5) and The Complete Ben Reilly Epic (Volume 1-6, not all released yet) and that will get you through what happens to scarlet spider

cheers, think it may be a re print. So where what would follow on from that? I'm pretty sure they stopped astonishing spiderman, is there a site that maybe gives a chronological order of the spider-man comics?

    So I went with

    Amazing Spider-Man 688-current

    Avenging Spider-Man 1-current

Is that good for a new reader and are there any other spidey titles worth getting monthly?

I read 'The Birth of Venom' and I loved it, especially the relationships between the characters.

Is there any more stories that focus on Peter Parker and his Pals rather than Spider-man? Or volumes?

There's certainly not enough of those stories. I'd recommend AMS 583. Don't let the Obama cover fool you, inside is one of my favorite Spidey stories, focused around Peter and Betty. Another story that has a good Spidey/Pete mix in the recent 678-679, kinda a Grady Scraps story. I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

As dumb as this sounds, watch the movies first, then delve into it.

Right everyone, i've literally never read a Spider-Man comic or seen the T.V programme, I saw the first film and that's it!!

I'd like to start reading the comics and building a collection like I have of Batman and Superman.

But where is a good point to start for someone who has never read Spider-man before? I'd like to get to know the characters, etc, but don't want to be going back too far as to spend a lot of money and time.

It doesn't have to be limited to one type of Spider-man comic though, but most suggestions on here are to jump in really recent with Amazing Spider-Man, will I miss out on knowing about characters and so forth by doing this? For example will I know what Spider-Island is?!

    Thanks for any help!!!!

Hopefully I wont be a novice for long!

I recently finished the Michelinie/McFarlane omnibus, and really liked it. The book ends with #329, and now I'm debating if I should start hunting down the floppies or cross my fingers for a Michelinie/Bagley omnibus down the road.

Any thoughts on this era? Are the stories good enough to continue, or does the quality drop off?

A couple weeks ago I was in the same boat. NO KNOWLEDGE at all. I started from 679.1 (.1's are jumping on points) and I've been doing just fine. I would recommend that.
