CBR: When Words Collide - Sep 20, 2010
In this week's WHEN WORDS COLLIDE, Tim finds himself lost in a forgotten classic as he explores the early days of the legendary Howard Chaykin and a bounty hunter with a heart of, well, certainly not gold.

I remember when this character showed up in Nova and I was like, "Who the heck is this???" You just knew that he had to be a throw back from somewhere and so I looked him up. This comic is such a classic and what a treasure and fun to read too.

wonderful article, i think you really get the point when you unleashed the word 'designed', despite i wouldn't be surprised if mr Chaykin knews a little about Alberto Breccia.
i too miss this sort of comics, and i wonder if the paper itself of today' comics is even apropriated...
as i see it now mr Chaykin is in a very recreative approach for his current mainstream books ( recreative about the whole page approach, the characters' drawing are filled with amplitude to take fun at the inking, everything is breathing, something that he started - as far as i can remember with a nick fury story for marvel ) which could surprise the non-aficionados population...
i too miss stories dark and gritty like 'Black kiss' and others previous works, the kind of confinment we could find in it, more immersive...always though that his art was really strong when it was kinda more 'contained'...

Excellent piece. It was nice to see someone go long on a forgotten Bronze Age gem. I haven't read this one for years, but you can put me down firmly in the Chaykin Lovers camp (and, yes, I'm over 30). He seemed to do a lot of these little treasures during pre-American Flagg. Well worth looking for those willing to dig.
Cheers,
Andrew

Apart from your, as usual, "elitist" attitude concerning which artists and writers are "good", this was an interesting article.
I still like Chaykin's art very much, even though it sometimes looks "ugly" and surprisingly enough, I'm over thirty as well.
