Kirkman's smart. He's establishing a new "normal" life for the characters, only to have them go through a zombie apocalypse again. Since we never saw the original rise of the zombies, we get to see it now.

Thing is they usually did the same stuff every arc - meet new folks - can they trust them - sit around a campfire, bond and get slightly depressed - sudden zombie outbreak! Survive to find a new place
