This is my good-bye present to Spider-Man, a character who gave me lots of great stories! Marvel, please clear Spidey of Gwen's death.
I know that Gerry Conway tried to do this within the story THE NIGHT GWEN STACY DIED where the Green Goblin said Gwen had died before Peter's webbing ever reached her, consequently, causing her neck to break from the sudden stop. Still, as Marv Wolfman showed in AMAZINGSM#190, Peter still suspects that HE played a part in Gwen's death!
I contend that Gwen was already dead and what was laying on that bridge was a corpse--after the Goblin had murdered her in her apartment. Remember, Peter didn't actually confirm that she was dead until he actually held her. In the Marvel Tales reprint I own (I haven't opened my precious original since the day I bought it (for 40.00 bucks--another "benefit" of the bringing Norman back retcon!) the colorist depicted the body as alraedy having started to turn white, meaning that she had been dead for a considerable length of time--instead of just a few moments ago.
It would be a nice gesture for Spidey and his fans, past and present, if a writer would clear Peter of any involvement in Gwen's death, once and for all.
