    Default IAM Marvel Community

Looking for better comic discussion? Ever wanna discuss the intricacies of the inking on a particular comic, or share work from your favorite, possibly obscure artist? Did you read something really great, or notice something really cool that you just gotta talk about? Wanna revel in and commiserate in the joys and frustrations of being a Marvel fan? Welcome to the IAM Marvel Community -- a place of general Marvel talk where individual tastes are shared, reviews are given, news is broken, and stances are taken. Named in honor of The Irredeemable Ant-Man, any and all posters are welcome. Tell us your favorites when it comes to comics, get to know us, and join in the fun!

What originally began as a very early preemptive save The Irredeemable Ant-Man thread grew into the largest subforum thread Newsarama had ever seen, eventually outlasting the title, and turning into a community thread. This is an all purpose general Marvel discussion thread where people can hopefully get to know each other and talk not only about Marvel Comics, but anything else that comes up. This thread had 28,508 posts on Newsarama, and then they went and changed, so we set up refugee camp here. The original thread in all its classic goodness may be found here.

Here at CBR, we grew larger than ever, prospered, laughed, cried, bitched, poked fun at, and spoke wisdom for a year and a half, and things were a comic talk utopia of sorts.

    Then came...THE SHADOW LOCK.

The Great Shadow Lock of 2010 came in an early morning stealth attack during the Board Memory Crisis that was happening concurrently. In order to spare the body, a really sexy limb had to be severed, though thankfully, benevolent moderator Expletive Deleted allowed said limb to be preserved, where it can be read in all of its 59,971 posts of baffling IAM 2.0 glory (and bathed in formaldehyde), here. Naturally, we neared 5k posts on Versions 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0, so here we are at a new volume -- glorious IAM 9.0, making this post #118,453.

GET TO KNOW THE REGULARS -- ORIGINS AND ECCENTRITICITES LISTED BELOW IN EASY TO DIGEST, CONDENSED FORM!

    * bebopeva88: Founder, President, dictator, and role model to many. Prone to going stabby when enraged. Has several personas, including, but not limited to bebopstradamus, an eerily accurate comic prophet, and P-bebop and N-bebop, which have been documented by other regulars as an overly positive, almost naive bebop, and a bile spewing negative bebop who will most certainly bring you down. Defends Jim Lee to the death, and sticks up for Cameron Diaz.

Loves: Wolverine, Jim Lee, Bloc Party, Cowboy Bebop, and the Phillies to a shocking degree. Loves Marvel, though it treats him like an abusive spouse, and he's confounded by DC's ineptitude. Word is, he's also responsible for shaping the minds of the current generation, so be afraid, oh yes, be very afraid. Resident comic art and anime guy.

Fan crush: Scarlett Johansson, January Jones, and...Jim Lee.

Pet creators: Jim Lee, Cho, Bachalo, Sean Murphy, Rocafort, Ellis, Charest, and CLAY MANNNNNNNNNNNNN

Particular comic likes: Jim Lee, Warren Ellis, Wolverine, Batman, Cho, Charest, Coipel, McNiven, Bachalo, Jae Lee, Cassaday, Dodson, Cheung, Williams III, the Kubert Bros., Art Adams, Quitely, Yu, Brubaker, Aaron, crime & noir stories, Noh-Varr, shiny holofoil covers and gatefolds, Eric O'Grady, Black Bolt, CLAY MANN.

Particular comic dislikes: the art of Rob Haynes, Steve Uy, Khoi Pham, Greg Land, Niimura, and Larry Stroman. The writing of nu-Claremont, Way, Austen, Casey and most Pak; Molly Hayes, all Flashes, most GL's, DC continuity, especially the Multiverse and multiple origins, Marvel's recent attempt to put awful creators on things he likes, IGN Comics' stupidity, Pixie, Legion, Wonder Man, Tigra, Daken, Wasp, She Hulk, Aunt May, perpetually stupid and regressing Peter Parker, nu-Deadpool, Loeb's Wolverine, nu-Wolverine origin & continuity

Origin:Stabbed by a radioactive hobo whilst oogling a Jim Lee illustrated X-Men issue, bebop fell into a coma, upon which he awakened weeks later as a stronger, smarter, still very white comic fan dictator. Those who opposed him were crushed, and those who sided with him were permitted to be underlings. Unhappy with the current state of the things, he decided to shape the world into a vision of his own via a most assured method -- by molding the minds of the upcoming generations. Once he deems fit, the bebopocalypse will be unleashed, and once that happens, well...things will go 'slode, that's for sure. And bebop will rule all.

    * RedRonin: Leader of a vicious simian army; hates Jim Lee's art despite having otherwise good taste in comics; ignores Booster, calls Kernel retarded every 12.7 minutes; surely doomed during the bebopapocalypse due to his Lee hate; only his Charest love may spare him; warns of impending simian doom, prone to shocking outbursts about his hate for PETA. Likes to be coy about his ethnicity, but we all know he's Samoan. Self proclaimed resident a-hole (except when it's Hurnslice, as seen in the "Staples Incident"). Butcher of the English language.

Fan crush: Alison Brie, Katy Perry, Christina Hendricks' boobs...and Stuart Immonen.

Pet creators: Immonen, Charest, Hickman, the Knaufs, Sean Murphy, Skottie Young

Particular comic likes: Iron Man, Black Panther, Warren Ellis, Travis Charest, Yu, Aja, Disco Dazzler, Coipel, Immonen, Lark, dreaming of Larroca's departure from IM, Jason Aaron, Medusa, Darkhawk, Skottie Young, and Brandon Peterson, despite his blindingly garish colors and shininess.

Particularly dislikes: The art of Jim Lee (I think he's faking it though), Uy, Pham, Stroman, and Land; Amadeus Cho, the creepy RASL guy, most anime, DC's continuity/stupidity, num, Boostered, Twilight, Greg Pak, Legion, IGN Comics' stupidity, Frank Miller, Jubilee, Fraction's butchering of Iron Man...and also the majority of things done to Iron Man over the past decade aside from Extremis.

Origin: Raised by apes, who stole the hairy baby from his unsuspecting mother, RR rose through the ranks to eventually become leader, after being so much of an a-hole to the former leader, that he swallowed his own tongue. Retreating to Samoa to escape large gatherings of people, he eventually came to the US mainland -- California to be exact, a baffling move by non-simian standards. Wielding a mastery of misogyny and racism, he masquerades as a student by day, and presents a danger to all as Simian King. Watch your genitals.

    * Sentry/Void aka Kid Impulse aka S/V: Human DCU encyclopedia; thinks being British is an occupation, had horrid taste in art, but is slowly improving. Prone to loving and leaving writers an a regular basis, and also to highly anticipating something, and then quickly hating it. Resident music guy. Has 28 comics that first got him into comics, and gets run over by cars. Provides occasional revelations about his likes, each one more shocking than the last. Largely has abandoned comics for music. Moves a lot.

    Fan crush: Kieron Gillen

Pet creators: Kieron Gillen, FVL, JRJR (looks-wise), Skottie Young, Paul Cornell

Particular comic likes: The Spot, Bart Allen, Umbrella Academy, Scott Pilgrim, Gillen, FVL, speedsters (particularly Bart Allen), Manapul, David Aja, Skottie Young, and smiley heroes, Paul Cornell

Particular comic dislikes: Nighthawk, Longshot, Pixie, Hal Jordan, people messing with Bart Allen, J. Scott Campbell

Origin: Found in a dumpster behind a Manchester club, young S/V was always singing Brit pop, and proclaiming every other comic he got to be the one that got him into the hobby. In an event that has never fully been explained, he somehow downloaded the entire history of the DCU into his brain, most of which fit, but some of which was crowded out due to the resident info related to obscure British bands and break up songs. He serves as a general IAM ambassador overseas, but mostly I think he goes to concerts.

    * Kernel: resident thread Butters; enjoys posting seemingly drunken pics of himself; took like a year and 2000+ posts to finally effing read IAM; used to have a mullet; now can drive and has a job, which he doesn't let anyone forget. Likes raping Books-A-Million, and hating on books that are otherwise universally loved. Dungeon master. Questionable taste in women. Dislikes many good comics. Dreaded Chew fan. Makes fantastic videos. Love of FiddleFaddle's life until recently being spurned in favor of RR.

Fan crush: Hayden Panettiere, Kanye West

Pet creators: Marco Checchetto (weird, right?), JRJR, Deodato, Morrison

Particular comic likes: Spider-Man, JRJR, mullets, Deodato, Checchetto, Venom/symbiotes, Winick, The Dark Tower, his Gale hating fetish, Chew, Batman, Grant Morrison

Particular comic dislikes: hardcore Morrison fans (until he became one), Bob Gale & Freak, Criminal, Batwoman

Origin: Birthed in the inbred infested swamps of the backwoods of NC, Kernel emerged from the womb with a mullet and a love for the absurd. Bankrupted due to his mother spending all of the family's savings on what should've been a cheap ebay auction, and losing all of his own personal assets on a Weezer CD, Kernel turned to a life of crime and comics raping in large book stores. After doing hard time, Kernel decided to walk the straight and narrow, and is now a student, with an actual job, and can likely be found discovering bands like Muse in 2009, using cool new terminology from 10 years ago, and listening to Kenye West.

GET TO KNOW THE REGULARS, CONTINUED:

*Hurnslice: Formerly mysteriously named old guy; resident TV and film guru, and uber, massive, scary T:SCC fan. Does things that make his nipples bleed, and writes scripts whilst giving play by play updates. Former name dropper. Unleashes the Hurnslicer when angry, cornered, constipated, or overly confused. Has masculine French soapbox posters. Curses Dollhouse's name and all that it stands for. Nearly made a life enemy of Val Staples, before the Staples Armistice of 2009 was arranged. Inexplicably dislikes The Green Mile film. Dreaded Chew fan.

Fan crush: Summer Glau, that awful Jesse devil spawn from T:SCC, BAG

    Pet creator: insufficient database

Particular comic likes: Spider-Man, the Umbrella Academy, Bone, BKV, The Escapists, Chew

Particular comic dislikes: Domo, Larry Stroman, JRJR on non Spidey work, I, Zombie

Origin: A fictional creation of 2 television writers, Hurnslice was miraculously and inexplicably brought into physical being at the beginning of the American cinema boom in the 1930's, perhaps even earlier. Dedicating his life to scriptwriting, running, and sneaking onto nearby studio lots, Hurnslice found love in T:SCC before watching it slowly die and have its grave desecrated by his arch enemy, Dollhouse. The trauma caused him to forget nearly all comic creator names. Rumored to be a 3rd Coen brother.

    * jlmoor aka Skynet: Midwest mom o' buying any X-comic obsessiveness, she is the female force of the thread, and also a hostile A.I. bent on human enslavement. Despite this, her internet sucks, so we're probably safe for awhile, though she can get the jump on you individually, with her stealth prowess. Resident X-fan. Has dangerous comic reading habits. Isn't allowed within 100 feet of Jason Aaron. Can't drop a comic if she buys it beginning with #1 unless it's Scarlet.

    Fan crush: Magneto, Black Bolt

Pet creators: Whedon, Jenkins, Clay Mann

Particular comic likes: X-anything, big event tie ins, Magneto, the Inhumans, particularly Black Bolt & Medusa

Particular comic dislikes: very easy to please...pretty much just anything that makes Magneto look bad, Scarlet, and Chew.

Origin: Her early days are unrecorded due to lack of records kept in the backwoods where she resides. At one point she was thought to be a family woman working in a crazy weird school district, until the ages of her children began to change, at which time it was confirmed that she has wholly transformed into a completely technological construct. Motives unknown, she hordes X-comics, and plots humanity's demise. The machines are coming.

*Skeets : Got lost, and found his way here after thinking this was a DC thread. Resident legal guru and wine class graduate. Likes DC things that I've purged from my mind, drops minis like they're on fire, and loves him some TV sitcoms and Buffy. Confirmed to be part of a dual entity collective also made up of Booster, this new organism was dubbed Skooster, and shortly after officially being recognized, and having the identity made public, the Booster persona was suppressed, and Skeets fled to Europe, where he was MIA for quite some time. He, or someone posing as him, has returned and is reading lots of law books. Professed Samnee fan who buys none of his work.

    Fan crush: Kanye West

Pet creators: Yildiray Cinar, Chris Samnee, Mike Allred, Fabio Moon, Gabriel Ba, Kevin Maguire

Particular comic likes: damn near anything DC, Buffy, Booster Gold, Rucka, Scalped, Darwyn Cooke, The Stand, Mike Allred, Fabio Moon, Gabriel Ba, Kevin Maguire, Nu-New Avengers

Particular comic dislikes: Thor, Wonder Woman (except for the BN tie in mini), Bendis

Origin: Lovechild of an unnamed 49ers benchwarmer, Skeets was abandoned on the steps of the DC NY offices for unknown reasons. They sent him to CA to live with their West coast branch, where he took up law studies, which largely entailed getting to know about fermented grapes. Finding his way into comics, he has been displaying curious taste by dropping quality titles of late, and morphed into Nu-Kernel (though he can see when fingers are clearly broken in an X-ray on a cover, unlike Classic Kernel). He is also prone to becoming a dual entity known collectively as Skooster, this Siamese Twin being is spoken of in hushed tones throughout the Golden State.

*FiddleFaddle: Resident youngster, and purveyor of questionable taste. Prone to posting in strange syntax, using colors and bolding as some form of additional communication compensation. Only one who consistently uses multi quote. Gets off on using phrase abbreviations. Cannot comprehend winky smilies, ie. is winky autistic. Formerly down with the Kernel, now has only eyes for RR.

Fan crush: creamsicles, Paco Medina, Kernel

Particular comic likes: Avengers: The Initiative, Spider-Woman, X-Men Legacy, Niimura's art, New X-Men, Paco Medina

Particular comic dislikes: Generation Hope, Guggenheim, Steve Uy

Origin: a sentient being formed from a bacteria collective on the rim of a creamsicle vat, FF escaped from the Good Humor factory, and soon fell in with the wrong crowd (re: the X-boards). Currently a liaison to that psychotic place, he remains a source of amusement, and occasional confusion and befuddlement for his fellow IAMers.

*RolandJP: longtime lurker, he has decided to emerge from the shadows after learning of his comic creator heritage. Champion of Doctor Voodoo and Black Panther, he fights against KKKernel, his archenemy, and struggles to understand the rapid fire banter and inside jokes that pelt him each time he comes to the thread. Does drive by postings that range from indecipherable, to amusing, to insights into his madness.

    Fan crush: ???

Particular comic likes: Black Panther, Doctor Voodoo, all things Wakanda

Particular comic dislikes: things that oppose his likes

Origin: A future host body that Hudlin created for himself, the artist formerly known as Excelsior inexplicably gained sentience, fled, and has since vacillated between being ally and creepy random uncle to the IAMers, both at Newsarama and at CBR.

*Iron Maiden: Elder-stateswoman of the thread, which perhaps hints at a future marriage to Hurnslice. Massive Doom and Thing fan, go-to poster for info about the past, most reserved member of the thread, which hints at either normalcy or quiet insanity.

Fan crush: Alan Davis, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Gene Colan

Particular comic likes: The FF, particularly The Thing and Doom

Particular comic dislikes: Avengers Disassembled, whippersnappers, Mark Millar

Origin: Unknown; she predates us all, and as such the historical record is unreliable, as it has been compromised through her filter, as all history has come from her hand.

*coveredinbees: largely enigmatic female member; X-fan

Fan crush: Paco Medina; formerly: Marjorie Liu

Particular comic likes: X-Men, Paco Medina, Scarlet Witch...bees.

    Particular comic dislikes: ???

Origin: Real life female Swarm, minus the Nazi part. We think.

*Aziz Abbasi: Psychotic foreigner who loves Spider-Man, 2 generation old video games, horrible movies, and genitalia tails

    Fan crush: ???

Particular comic likes: Whatever you dislike

Particular comic dislikes: Spider-Man, bad films, porn

    Origin: CLASSIFIED

*colossalreign: talented art-dude who acts as official ambassador for all things Colossus and Claudio Castellini; has an unnatural aversion to DeviantArt llamas

    Fan crush: CLAUDIO CASTELLINI

    Particular comic likes: COLOSSUS

Particular comic dislikes: people who draw Colossus as regular dude size

    Origin: He's Claudio Castellini.

*KMACthaKilla: 12 yr. old who really likes zombies. REALLLLLLLLY LIKES ZOMBIES. Ignored by most regulars.

    Fan crush: ZOMBIEZZ

    Particular comic likes: ZOMBIEZZZ

    Particular comic dislikes: NON-ZOMBIEZZZZ

Origin: The product of concentrated teenage male pop culture, ritalin, and poor education, he was developed as a test tube fetus by the Umbrella Corporation, before naturally wreaking havoc, escaping, and plaguing the internet.

*comics91: still hasn't read the last 6 issues of IAM; African-American extra on The Wire due to his Baltimore war zone location; my occasional minion, and Comic News Lad; petulant toddler; posts quarterly

Particularly likes: chillin', The Venture Bros., X-Men, Koi Pham *gasp!*

Particularly dislikes: safe cities; making posts consisting of more than a simple sentence or two

I'm just glad he got a scholarship, otherwise he might have struggled for money.

Also, does this mean you will call Lil' Bow Wow or Lil' Kim "Lil'"?

    Delayed Reactions!

    Astonishing X-Men 31-35
: Clearly identifiable as an Ellis penned tale just from content and style alone, this is another X-Men in Ellis-land arc -- genetics, technology, and space are on display, all things squarely in Ellis' wheelhouse. It's a solid arc, and befitting AXM, it feels big. It's a widescreen, fast moving, space action arc, devoid of the frequent hand-wringing and not doing much of anything while hanging around one place and waiting for danger to come stuff that happens a lot in UXM.

This isn't the X-cult pushed against a wall, bitching about it, and mentioning every 2 minutes how they're on the brink of extinction with Sergeant Cyclops playing Nick Fury. This has a classic feel to it characterization-wise, but it's strange in that it feels like characters have regressed, yet this is clearly taking place in modern continuity (albeit a bit behind the other X-books, naturally, due to delays). Cyclops and Wolverine bicker a lot, but it's different from the way it typically is today, and more like how it used to be. Wolverine in particular is a bit odd, complaining about damn near everything he has to do, and being a bit of an Ellis-mouthpiece joke-maker. None of it is wildly off base, or all that off putting, but it's a bit weird at times. Whereas Ellis' first arc had him making everyone be in all-Ellis-speak initially, here he has a pretty distinguishable voice for each character, but some of them feel a bit off at times.

#31 is a pretty sweet, high octane rescue mission against the clock, and while that kinetic pace isn't maintained throughout, the arc is fairly fast paced. The antagonist's motivations actually make sense, and although still insane, are presented in something of a more grounded and understandable "real life" slant that was kind of refreshing.

Jimenez isn't an artist I ever list among my favorites, even in an expanded list, but I readily acknowledge that he is a very skilled artist, and he's unique in that while I wouldn't list him as even among my top 50 favorites, every time I see his stuff, I like it more than I had remembered, and/or am impressed at times in ways I didn't think I would be. Despite that, there's a few storytelling snafus where Ellis clearly relied on him to portray something visually, and it's unclear what exactly happened. Nothing major, but it happened a few times. D'Armata on colors doesn't help the overall look of things...so...much...neon, though I guess it was quasi-fitting for some scenes.

Abigail Brand is essentially a team member throughout! Yay!

    She doesn't do much! Boo!

Jimenez draws her glasses as stick-on Spidey eyes! WTF?!?

    She takes them off! Yay!

Bags under her eyes? STOP BRINGING THAT UP ALL THE TIME, IT'S ODD!

What, it interests me. I always though maybe there was a reason for them beyond just being tired and overwo-- SHUT UP!!!

Kick ass Logan vs. Brood fight! IT'S NOT A SPOILER, THEY'RE ON THE COVERS!

Logan says Scott has taken as much battle damage as he has! I HIGHLY DOUBT IT!

Beast did some creepy stuff that came back to bite the X-Men in the ass, and they should taunt him with it whenever they see him after his X-Force hissy fit abandonment!

What, no eject and rescue gel option, Brand? SHE USED IT IN SI!

Scott lets loose with his optic blasts again! It's fun!

Scott never touched his visor any of the umpteen times he used his powers! HAS THE MENTAL FIRING WISH COME TRUE?

Wolverine shows battle damage a long time after a fight. He heals mega turbo fast, Jimenez!

I got the Charest cover for #31! IT TOOK 7 YEARS TO DO!

The cover to #34 is a LIE.

If Wolverine punches the antagonist of the arc, the X-Men will berate him ad nauseum and wish death upon him.

The X-Men get a brand spankin' new rescue version of the X-Jet with creepy legs on it from Japan! HOW DID THEY AFFORD IT?

    Warre--HE BUYS EVERYTHING!

Well, does it get destroyed during its inaugural missi--WHAT DO YOU THINK?!?

If you tell Wolverine to cut a hole in something, he will get all bitchy and complain about it.

Since this is a weird classic/modern feeling hybrid, characterization-wise, I guess there isn't any Beast lecturing of Scott on ethics, huh? THINK AGAIN, PATSY!

If you want to have a private conversation with Beast after he's lectured you for 2 pages, and tell Wolverine and company to leave, Wolverine will get pissy like a teenage girl and bitch about being treated like a kid.

Take some pain meds, Scott, you're a pain in Wolverine's sack!

Get a haircut, Beast, Wolverine has to breathe that shit in during moulting season!

    Underground gene pervert Willy Wonka!

The X-Men will take care of you until you die!

Giant Brood-Sauron! Does it breathe fire? THIS ISN'T A BENDIS BOOK!

A fun, fast paced arc. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it is a refreshing change of pace from the stressed, whining, neurotic X-Men that dominates their stories currently (especially pre-SC). This is the action-y, cracking wise whilst experiencing insanity and life threatening danger X-Men, hopping around from SF to space without batting an eye, and nary a Utopia in sight, seemingly enjoying it the whole time.

Did you see how he dresses? Lack of genitalia has already been confirmed.
