Default Dandy Monster Comic First Issue (1939)

    Hello Folks!
Not sure if this is the right place to post this but here it goes...

I normally collect GB high value stamps and booklets, but recently a Dandy Comic book has come into my possession. I wonder if someone would be so kind to give me their opinion on value and grade?
I have uploaded images of the book below. Your help will be much appreciated!

Well im not sure what that is, except that it looks like an early Dandy annual of some sort (i can safely say its not the 1st weekly comic). Does it have a date on it? If its from 1939 like you say then its probably very rare and valuable, though im not sure how much. First thing to do would be to find out a date of publication, i think.

the grade doesnt look too bad, though its not really high grade, its probably around mid grade or just below as long as all the pages are still intact and bound.

Unsure if most others who post here will know what it is, as its mainly US comics discussed in here... Anyone??

    That's a nice book you've run across.

If it's the original it sells for several thousand dollars.

However, you'll need to make certain that it isn't just a beat up copy of the recent replica edition, although if it is, the wearing is almost professionally good.

I don't know anything about this, but I did some very quick searching on the old internets here. There is a Dandy Book Gallery, which shows the covers of every Dandy Annual, and this does appear to be the first one, from 1939:

I also found a vintage boko store that has a copy in stock, and they are asking £2500 for it. I should note that their copy actually appears to be more beat up than yours:

These people, on the other hand, have a copy that appears to be slightly nicer than yours, and they are asking £1950:

The one thing I would verify if I were you is whether or not Dandy ever reprinted any of these books. Since these are annuals, I'm guessing they probably didn't, but it's possible that like most books there were 2nd or third printings in which case you'd need to see what edition your book is. But if they didn't reprint or put out later editions, I'd guess your book is worth between £1800-2000. That's just based on prices I am seeing online, and those are retail prices; you can expect to get significantly less if you sell it to a dealer or sell it on ebay.

Still, $3,000 isn't anything to sneeze at. Good luck!

Unfortunately, having an incredibly valuable platinum age comic doesn't mean much unless you have the ability to sell it. The demand for these comics is nearly as rare as the comics, themselves. You won't just be able to walk into a comic shop and expect them to shell out $1,000 to buy it.

Unless you have a specific plan of action in mind, I would suggest following one of these three courses of action:

    1. I happen to be good friends with a major dealer who has the cash and interest to buy that kind of book, has always been honest and made fair offers with me, and could easily verify whether or not its an original and what its approximate worth is. If you'd like his e-mail address, send me a private message. I get absolutely nothing from him if you guys work out a sale. I just know he's a good guy, and that's a rare thing when dealing with major sellers.

    2. Try ebay. You may have to relist the comic many times before it finds a seller. I've seen books like that get relisted for well over a year before they sell, but the end result would likely be worth it.

    3. Go to a major comic convention and ask for offers at the tables dealing in older comics. Get a variety of offers before making a decision, and feel free to play offers against one another. J

Whatever route you take, understand that it's highly unlikely you'll get what the book is worth. A dealer will have to make a significant profit for forking over such a large amount of money for a low interest item, and the book probably isn't high interest enough to get what it's worth on ebay. You may ultimately need to list it for a lot less in order to get it to move.

Definitely decide what it's worth to you before taking any course of action. I doubt you'll get $2500, and even $1000 may prove to be unrealistic.

That being said, NICE FIND! Even walking away with $800 cash would be a pretty sweet situation, here.

I dunno, in the UK i bet thered be a fair amount of interest from collectors. Dandy is one of the UKs premier kids comics titles and has been a popular household name for the last 50 years+. Granted, in the US i bet most people will never have heard about Dandy.

    Possibly. I hope that's true.
